R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: Absolutely fantastic game !
And what intensity ?
My Left Coast, Bluenose Bookend Brother, Hap Stokes, has been telling me all pre-season that the Nucks were a different team, but to get to see it this for myself tonight...
Wow... I had always heard that the rap on this Vancouver team was that they are 'soft.' But these Canucks don't back down to anyone...
First, BC's Jason Bay putting on a hitting clinic for my BoSox...
Now, this...
Keep it up out on the Left Coast.
Whatever you're putting in the water supply out there, Hap... It seems to be working.

Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: So my Left Coast friends.... have the Canucks been severely under rated? Or have have the Flames been severely over rated?
I only caught the overtime ..... as I had to attend the Leafs slaughter at the ACC.
Four goals on Luongo.... 5 on the Kipper.... aren't they the top goalies in the West?
My bet is that Calgary is hard pressed to make the playoffs..... Keenan is gone by January.

holly cow from vancouver, Canada writes: Flames fans have to get used to two things this year. 1. Losing games to the Canucks (you've had plenty of practice getting used to that though haven't you?)
and 2. Bertuzzi taking a penalty at exactly the wrong time. Loucks you are a bigot. If I see you calling my hometown VanKong again I will find you and beat your sorry face in.- Posted 12/10/08 at 2:00 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Jasper the Black Lab from Canada writes: Some of us who watched the Canucks develop during the off season were quite willing to report that this team can score, and has got the right toughness in the right places. Hard to imagine why the conventional 'experts' couldn't see this coming. Even the Vancouver Sun newspaper has stopped crapping on GM Mike Gillis now.

Short answers: Yes, and Yes.
Luongo is definitely one of the top 5 goalies in the western Conference (Luongo, Turco, Nabokov, Guigere, Bryzgalov), but the time to include Kipper in any such list is past. Having said that, Lui was not at all sharp on the 3 goals in the first period last night, and has room to improve on breakaways and shootouts.- Posted 12/10/08 at 10:28 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

I read the Calgary Herald online, and they give pretty harsh judgement of the Flames, considering it was a close game for the most part.

Paul Bayer from Parksville, Canada writes: Great game to watch. I'll still say NW division will be a dogfight all year. Only two games in and coaches are being fired . The last week of the season will be more important than the first week. I know Calgary is usually a slow starting team. Good tilt between Iginla and Mitchell. Thought Willieboy would get decision until Iggy dropped him.

Ziad Fazel from Calgary, Canada writes: Hap, I watched Canucks prospect Mason Raymond on the Ceeb in the 3rd period and OT. Talked to one buddy, but she only cares about the Flames prospects (part homer, part groupie maybe). I see the usual riff-raff on this forum who I hope can chime in.
In my brief exposure he showed good jump, discipline to cross centre and dump the puck rather than try another rush near the end of his shift, and was trusted to be on the ice in OT. Phaneuf did knock him off the puck too easily in one rush, although I read that he has surprised the fellow Alberta boy a few times too.

This Herald article compared him to Glenn Anderson, but I did not see that mean streak. Maybe more like a Matthew Lombardi. His hero is Joe Sakic, which I could see with some more strength, weight and experience staying on his skates.
http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospects/mason_raymond
Looks like he has put on about 20 pounds in the last year, and may need a little more time getting used to it. His stats of just over a point a game, and penalty minute a game, are typical of many high-scoring forwards in junior who make it to the NHL for their offence. Don't know his penalty mix between aggression and hooking.
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=87914
NHL defencemen have a combination of speed and size that you don't see much in junior. He may be that Sakic if he keeps skating fast, and making plays, given their punishment game in and out.
One last note. I probably would have stayed in college and finished. Yes, you don't get the game experience of junior, but you get your degree, can spend more time in the gym and different balance sports (Neil Sheehy from Harvard took ballet and I ain't calling him a pansy) and still hit the NHL younger than my tie collection.- Posted 12/10/08 at 1:10 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

B.C. Expat from Ottawa-Hull, NCR, Canada writes: Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: So my Left Coast friends.... have the Canucks been severely under rated? Or have have the Flames been severely over rated?
Both -- I'm not sure why the pundits declared that the Canucks have no scoring depth, when I don't really see much more on any other Northwest team. In the capped era, all teams are pretty close -- the 'terrible' Canucks were only a handful of points behind the division winner last season, so I don't know why everyone was so convinced they'd be so much worse... because they didn't sign two guys they didn't plan to sign?
All of their lines have showed very good chemistry, though the second line still needs to click into place. They're getting chances though, while the Sedins-Bernier and Kesler-Burrows-Hansen are already tearing it up.
I don't really see why most think Calgary is the best team in the division. They're not terrible, but I just don't know where it's coming from.- Posted 12/10/08 at 1:14 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

xoxo hockey girl from Canada writes: R Miller, you're so full of it. If every bases their predictions on the first game each team plays then it would mean Detroit loses and Toronot a cup contender....hmm hardly....
Flames are always known for their slow start but for me last night's games was just sheer laziness on the Flames side. Besides the Flames fans are either at the game or bars watching it.
Besides Pens will probably have a tougher year compared to the Flames considering they want to win the cup but with half their core team missing will be an issue especially on the blue line. So just don't count them out so quickly.- Posted 12/10/08 at 5:32 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Hmmm.... I actually liked this thread better when the Flames fans were being quiet.... :)
Except for Iginla's single landed haymaker on Mitchell, the Canucks beat the Flames in just about every aspect of the game last night from what I saw ...
Still you are correct, it's only two games into the season...

Seriously, it’s nice to have variety on the threads! Most of the time ;) Anyways a month in to the season is where I will decide whether or not to hit the panic button..lol..but too early to tell. But that game reminded me of how Calgary won the 3rd game in the playoff run with SJ, but unfortunately it was Van playing calgary’s style… I will admit Van has the scoring potential for sure but we will see how well their blue line stands up for the rest of the season.- Posted 13/10/08 at 6:04 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Good for you in sticking up for your team...
You are now nominated as the Flames' equivalent of Scotty Loucks...:)
But I think that Jasper the Black Lab from Vancouver and Elsewhere, Canada has it absolutely correct...
NL's Danny Cleary showed that Phaneuf is completely beatable a few years ago in the playoffs ... I am afraid that the rest of the league is going to also figure this out ...
I would also be worried with Keenan in there.
That guy is so uni-dimensional as a coach that it is not funny.

xoxo hockey girl from Canada writes: Miller,
Cleary as showed the Pens how to win the cup in June too…don’t forget about that ;)
------
Jasper has a point and I admit generally in the first 10 games the Flames are known to be flat footed but in the end it is where it counts and let’s just say this is the last run for the Vancouver because what their GM offered to Sundin was stupid crazy and with their twins coming up to the Unrestricted Free Agency status, you only get one chance to keep the core players together.
---
Keenan knows this year has to be where he shines now with grittier players instead of the princess type, it will work out.- Posted 13/10/08 at 4:59 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment
