Is it time to start worrying, yet?
Carbonneau has lost the room... Gainey, do something...
  2. j wilson from vancouver, Canada writes:
    The Leafs won last night.

    Just saying.
  3. Alberto Bayo from Canada writes: The Canadiens looked like they weren't quite ready. They've got to generate more shots on net for sure. Price is weak on the blocker side. Lucky to pick up a point.
Weird to hear the HNIC old theme song on RDS....GO HABS GO
  4. Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: A very exciting game. Both teams played a strong, fast style. Buffalo is going to surprise some folks. Miller was outstanding, Sabres defense hermetic. Lang and Price excellent for Montreal.
  5. Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: Watching several games tonight thanks to NHL.com's excellent multiple live TV feeds, it is clear that teams are more closely matched than ever. No fan can feel complacent about their club. Thrilling moments are in store. BTW no complaints about Price; 35 saves and a confident performance. The Sabres are no slouches.

Why, at this rate, the Leafs will go 82-0-0, the Habs 0-0-82 ;)

We shouldn't be joking around like this, those poor Leaf fans might start taking this seriously.

Lousy ice, lousy way to start a season. If Buffalo can't produce ice properly, I say move them to Toronto along with the Bills. Both will instantly be the best clubs in town :).

Okay, I can't seem to stay on topic tonight. Looking forward to a good win on good ice tomorrow.

    Cheers.
  7. R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: Dave the Rave from Ottawa, Canada:

    You are being too kind.

Miller and the Sabres were outstanding.

Price and Lang both played well.

The Canadiens' defense gave up too many shots.

    Too many Canadiens were MIA...

Carbonneau should threaten to use Max Pac if that happens again.

    Cheers
  8. Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: Miller, can't agree with you there...Sabres played an excellent game. They have lots of talent and a great coach. Have to give them credit. I do agree that Max Pac needs to be with the big club. The operative word this year is 'parity'.
  9. Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: BTW Miller, did you notice how solid Rivet and Numminen were? Rivet gives Buffalo a huge boost, and I am sure he was pumped to play against the Habs. Your namesake robbed a couple of Habs. PS on another subject...don't know if you saw the Rangers-Hawks contest...Wade Redden is making fools of his critics.
  10. Mariposa Belle from Leacockland, Canada writes: Dave and #M - I did not watch the game, so all I have to go on is the article ( which my father would classify as "piss poor").

I know it is early, but whichever team comes out of the
east to challenge for Stanleyis going to endure a full season of all-in mud wrestling. Tonight was the opening match and I suspect there will be many more this season.
  11. Bill H from Maritimes, Canada writes: R Miller,

Really sorry about my Sabres beating your Habs.

BTW, I love your posts on the political threads.

    Cheers
  12. R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: Dave the Rave from Ottawa, Canada:

What part of my first post can you not agree with ?

36 shots is way too many... Kudos to Price for stopping 35 of them.

BTW I always liked both Craig Rivet and Wade Redden -- solid performers both.

    Cheers
  13. garlick toast from Canada writes: arrgh,it wasn't good for me..They had a good checking game going for awhile but the Sabres got the edge in that dept.Buffalo also won most of the face-offs. Does Koivu belong on the second line? Does Lapierre belong on the fourth line.Oh well, the P.K. works. Some very weird calls by the refs.and a quick whistle when the puck was lying there in the open. Oh well, one game, one point only 81 games to go.
  14. Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: Miller--I do not agree that I was 'being kind' LOL. You are absolutely correct, 35 shots is too much. BTW Belle--If you had seen the Thrashers-Caps game you would have been shocked. No points for Ovechkin; Bogosian fights Brashear; Thrashers explode for seven goals. It will be VERY interesting in the East.
  15. R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: Bill H from Maritimes :

    Thanks, Bill.

By the way, Ryan is definitely disowned from the Miller Clan after this.

However, Price was fantastic too -- ending the night with a 0.972 save percentage...

Looking forward to tomorrow night's meeting with the new and improved Leafs.

    Cheers
  16. R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: garlick toast from Canada:

    Agree with all your observations.

However, the Habs' face-off percentage on the penalty kill was a measly 38%.

Does Lapierre belong on the fourth line ?

    The jury is still deciding.

    Cheers
  17. garlick toast from Canada writes: Lousy ice is a real equalizer.Price will have to work on his shoot out skills.
  18. Matt O from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Canada writes: October is hockey's silly season for sure...let's not forget all the '77 Habs-Senators references being made this time last year. Another bit of trivia folks may forget: Alexandre Daigle was named rookie of the month in October, his first year in the league.

So what happens in October basically stays in October.

Sorry Sens fans for picking on your team twice in this post. Just both my factoids happen to relate to them is all.

    Cheers.
  19. R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: Matt O from Toronto, Ontario, Canada:

There seems to be a slight epidemic of "blame the ice" breaking out in Montreal this season...

I heard that one as well as "blame the skates" in September...

What happens in October stays in October.

    I'll leave it at that.

    Cheers
  20. Matt O from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Canada writes: R Miller,

I suppose the ice didn't stop the Sabres from getting 36 shots, so point taken.

Anyhow, looks like the NE will be a tough one this year...heck, even the Leafs might be in the mix.

    Cheers.
  21. j wilson from vancouver, Canada writes:
Yeah, but did you guys see the Leafs last night?

Anyway, Habs played well. Should be a better year for Canadian teams.
  22. Adam Laperriere from Canada writes: Where is that offensive powerhouse?
  23. Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: Besides the Sabres' win, Columbus beating Dallas last night reaffirms the parity that will be in evidence this year. One of the effects of the influx of younger players is the growing importance of the coaches. When the players execute in tighter, more cohesive systems (such as practiced by Ruff, Hitchcock, Hartsburg, Wilson etc), they are seeing they can beat teams that have more skill (on paper). While Les Canadiens are a better club than last year, Gainey and Carbo are taking nothing for granted, Neither should their fans; but a shootout loss on the road is still a point. As for 'what happens in October stays in October', that cliche may be changed this year to 'what happens in October can be the difference in where you finish the season'. PS Rangers look pretty darn good so far, and Brodeur is even sharper. I say all bets are off in the East.
  24. Robert McKenzie from Ottawa, writes: ---

Yes, all bets are off in the East - I suggest the NHL scraps the Western conference and we can all watch the Eastern teams in an exciting and unpredictable season.

That's the only way the cup will end up in the east.
  25. Swifty J from Mtl, Canada writes: When you have to dress Begin, Dandenault and Brisebois and put Kostopoulos on a scoring line, you're testing your depth. Still, most of those players played reasonably well (except Kosto's hands of stone probably cost a goal and Begin nearly flushed the game singlehandedly). Chipchura should get the call tonight, IMO. I'd have Begin sit and juggle the lines a bit, starting by putting Lang and Kovalev together.

    Some bright spots:

Price, Lang, Latendresse, the 4th line. The PK. The overtime, even though Buffalo dominated a good chunk of it. O'Byrne seemed to visibly grow into his role as the game went on.

    Some not-so-bright spots:

Komisarek and Markov looked like raw rookies on the Sabres' goal. Komi, if the puck is bouncing like a Superball, do not lunge towards it and swat at it. Markov, stay on your [expletive] feet.

The top two lines: largely MIA. A few good shifts, nothing more.

Burning question for tonight: will anyone win a faceoff in Toronto, or will the two teams put on a Goofy Gophers act whenever the puck is dropped? "After you!" "No, after you, I insist!" "You're too kind but please, take the puck!" "Very well then, since you're so adamant!" "My pleasure!"
  26. I. Con O'Clast from Canada writes: price, miller, ward, brodeur, lundquist, nabokov, etc. goalies have become too good for the good of hockey. we need goals.
  27. Jake ---- from Canada writes: Like I said on many other posts, THE HABS OVERACHEIVED LAST YEAR. This year team will be gunning for them every game since they won the conference last season.

I can't wait to see tonights game, it should be a good one with 2 great coaches going head to head. If Toskala plays like he did last game I see the leafs winning it tonight.

    -----------------------

Good observation - the 100th anniversary and the Habs won't make it past the 2nd round of the palyoffs - does this mean riots, looting and burning by the herd (fans) when bounced out of the playoffs? - and tonight's preliminary slap in the face will be a loss to the exciting and rejunvanted Leafs (for now at least).

It has been said, "Leafs suck" but the Habs will end up sucking harder....

Congratulations, "Robert". You're the second member of my troll list, officially marked for attention-starvation. For the rest of the season, it'll be just as if you don't exist, no matter how outrageous or offensive you get.

I realize this one post is sweet, sweet troll food, and I fully expect you to bait me relentlessly for a few days after this hearty meal, but you'll soon get over it.

    Cheers!

    Doesn't get better than that.

Dinner at the Keg..... couple bottles of wine.... and the leafs taking them to a shootout.

    Will report back later.

    Cheers
  33. Swifty J from Mtl, Canada writes: I already gave reasons (in the Leafs post-game thread) for the Leafs having a slight edge tonight and see no reason to revise. Regardless of what happens tonight or Monday, see you all Tuesday. Turkey time, doncha know.
