Fines for Stampeders

Globe and Mail Update

CALGARY — Two Calgary Stampeder players and an assistant coach have been fined by the CFL for confronting and verbally abusing an on-field official.

Defensive backs Brandon Browner and Dwight Anderson were each fined an undisclosed amount while defensive line coach Cornell Brown was hit with a $2,500 fine for an incident that occurred last Friday following Calgary's 37-34 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

“We hold our teams, and in particular our coaches, to a high standard, especially when it comes to respect for our officials who are so integral to our game,” CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon said in a statement.

CFL director of officiating Tom Higgins spent two days investigating what transpired at the end of the Calgary-Saskatchewan game at Mosaic Stadium.

The Stampeders felt their last-gasp, on-side kick attempt had been successful and that they should have had the football with a chance at tying or winning the game. Video replay officials ruled no player had touched the ball, which gave Saskatchewan possession to run out the clock.

As Steen trotted off the field, he was reportedly harangued by Calgary players and an assistant coach as he made his way to the officials' dressing room located across the hall from the Stampeders' room.
