Sundin won't be rushed into decision

Globe and Mail Update

TORONTO — Mats Sundin still does not know if he will play hockey again this season, and he said Thursday afternoon he will not be rushed into a decision.

"I just hope people can respect that it's my right to make a decision about playing, and I think I've earned that right."

Sundin, 37, turned aside the usual question of whether he will return to the Toronto Maple Leafs if he decided to play another season, or accept an offer from one of the other teams that would like to sign him.

Sundin became a free agent on July 1 and has a contract offer from the Vancouver Canucks of $20-million (U.S.) for two seasons. The New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens are also pursuing the former Leaf captain.

"As I've said all along, I have to make a decision first about playing," Sundin said. "I haven't even thought about [playing for other teams]."

Sundin spoke at a press conference to promote a charity hockey game he will play in on Friday night at the Air Canada Centre with other current and former NHL players plus a group of celebrities.
