  1. C C from Canada writes: Phelps' primal scream Bolt's chest thump = Novak's victory "cheer"

If Novak thought tonite's crowd was hostile, wait until he's up against Fed on Saturday. He was quite the tool during the post-game interview.
  2. Antonio San from Canada writes: Roddick lacks a brain...
  3. Matthew Goff from Toronto, Canada writes: Would have been nice to watch the whole game...I can't believe that with all the channels at Roger's disposal a quarter final of a grand slam tournament was not live in its entirety. No TSN2 yet so show the NFL game which was also on about 4 other US channels using the same feed. Nuts.

The US partisan crowd makes the Wimbledon - Murray support seem like murmours in church...
  4. Allan Wexler from Canada writes: I agree with Novak's comments in his post match interview. Roddick is a snotty nosed American, one dimensional tennis player, who has reached his peak and has the best looking girlfriend among the top 5 players. But his earlier comments about Djokovic faking injuries were foolish and I'm glad Novak mopped the courts with him last night. You can argue that he didn't take the "high road" but I like his honesty and emotion. The fact that he is an incredible tennis player doesn't hurt either. Roger is in for a very tough fight.
  5. Kim Philby from Canada writes: It seems like Novak really got inside Andy's head the first two sets. I was rooting for Andy, but Novak deserved the win; he simply outplayed Roddick.

The U.S. Open crowd can be such jerks. What is it with those bozos who think the world wants to hear them shouting out?

I had to switch to a French channel to watch the match. Learned some French tennis terminology. Balle de manche!
  6. Pat Billings from CDN, Canada writes: Roddick is a tool who just can't compete with the big boys.

Typical U.S. homer crowd. I'm surprised they didn't break into a "USA, USA" chant.
  7. P McLean from Canada writes: Typical Canadian response here. Djokovic is an a$$. He has a well known history of calling out trainers if the match isn't going his way in order to get time to regroup. Look up Gael Monfils and Djokovic's "friendship" with him. Djokovic admitted in a post-match interview he called out the trainer several times when he wasn't hurt. Since Monfils thought they were buds, he didn't take it up with the chair umpire. Big mistake. It's reached a point where Fed's my favorite player, and my second favorite is whoever is playing Djokovic.
  8. Anand *** from Canada writes: What unbelievable hubris, Novak! Hey, you can make fun of your peers and you have admitted in the past as correctly pointed out by P McLean above that you faked injuries while playing Monfils and now you can't take a joke when someone states the obvious? Obviously, this guy lacks grace and perspective. Little wonder Federer and Nadal steer clear from any form of social contact with the likes of him. If this is what he is at # 3 hard to imagine what he will be like if he ever gets to 1!!!! The American crowd right from J Block to Roddick's fans speak for themselves. Sad.
  9. D T from Toronto, Canada writes: The match wasn't going Novak's way??? he won the first 2 sets! P McLean must be a dumb yankee.......screaming "USA, USA" at the Republican convention.

Roddick is a spoiled loud mouthed brat. He freaks out and starts yelling at everybody when really he only has himself to blame. He thinks he's better than he is, when really his talent level is clearly a level below the big boys.
  10. David Gehring from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada writes: Why argue over Djokovic and Roddick? I think most of us can agree that they are both arrogant, immature and mouthy. Can't say either one has impressed me as a tennis player or as a human being. And what makes tennis so entertaining right now is to watch Nadal and Federer dominate those two posers one event after another.
  11. Kim Philby from Canada writes: Can't say I'm all that much concerned about how nice or nasty these guys are. (And for those dumping on Djokovic, keep in mind he wasn't the one who smashed his tennis racket to smithereens in a fit of temper last night.) What interests me is how well they play the game.
  12. Moose Lion from Canada writes: Djokovic got exactly what he deserved.

I've never been a fan of Roddick, but I was glad to hear his comments. Anyone who follows tennis knows that Roddick said exactly what every player on the tour knows to be the truth.

Tommy Robredo said the exact same thing as Roddick this week. I bet if Robredo was American certain posters on this board would be going after him as well.
  13. Terra Borealis from Canada writes: It's sports, they booed, so what. They were upset that their favourite lost, and Djokovic taking a shot at him did not help. The match itself was pretty good. Roddick showed that he is indeed a one-dimensional player. Serve is his only real weapon. Forhand is so so. He has improved at the net, though. Once you neutralize his serve he has nothing to fall back on. This might work for him against defensive baseliners. Djokovic, on the other hand, like Federer is an all-court player. All that he had to do is return Roddick's serve and get him into rallies most of which he won.

I actually had to call Bell and order the French package that contains RDS (the French language version of TSN) in order to watch this match. We can expect more tennis drought as CTV Globe Media has announced that they will carry more and more tennis on their new TSN2 network - the channel which Bell and other major carriers have refused to carry so far. But then, this is Canada so they can do it to us, as can they afford to gauge us on other things (e.g. cell phone services).
  14. F. D. from Canada writes: P McLean, you are 100% correct. I agree with everything you said. Typical Canadian arrogance - as if the crowd wouldn't act in EXACTLY the same manner if the tournament was in Canada and a Canadian player was playing. And yes, my favorite player is Federer and my second favorite is anyone playing Djokovic - he's such an idiot and its no wonder that both Federer and Nadal don't like him. He has no class.
  15. Ryan M from Ottawa, Canada writes: Djokovic crying foul lke that is just pathetic. This guy should be able to take a jab, like he dishes them out.

Roddick's game is his serve, and not much more at all. Djokovic played fantastic defence last night, forcing Roddick into errors.

I hope Federer smashed Novak and takes him down a notch. You know the crowd will be all over him.
  16. D M from King City, Canada writes: I agree that Novak needs to learn to take a few verbal jabs here and there as he is used to making fun of others. As for the boos, he should also understand that he's playing in New York against the lone American male left in the draw. Nevertheless, he is just 21 after all and will hopefully learn to handle things better as he matures. Having said that, I'm rooting for Roger to win the Open. IMHO, Djokovic is too beat up to offer any resistance to Federer.
  17. Allan Wexler from Canada writes: david gehring - I'm surprised that Novak hasn't impressed you as a tennis player. I guess victories over Nadal, Federer and Roddick isn't good enough. You may not like his behaviour, but he is clearly the 3rd best player in the world and can beat the top two on a given day on a hard court. I love Federer but think he is in tough against Djokovic. May be the match of the tournament.
  18. Terra Borealis from GTA, Canada writes: It's funny (and somewhat foolish) that some posters think the tour players should be buddies and hang out and like each other. They are competing for the money (and lots of it) first and foremost. There is no love there. Off camera Federer probably hates Nadal's guts. Some players, like Roddick and Djokovic, are simply not into that false humility thing. That's why men's tennis is more interesting these days.
  19. Terra Borealis from GTA, Canada writes: Federer is my pick, as well, to win on Saturday. Djokovic will likely be distracted by yesterday's spat and the crowd may give him hard time. Still Djokovic is the only player who can beat Federer and Nadal on hard court on any given day. So, it's going to be tough. Federer to win 3:1... Expect a few tie breaks.
  20. Matthew Goff from Toronto, Canada writes: I would argue that Andy Murray is the third best player in the world now...he has beaten Novak twice in succession in Toronto and Cincinnati and he has the game to force Novak into unforced errors. Shame Nadal is in his half.
  21. K Ottawski from Ottawa, Canada writes: I hope Djokovic win it all. Andy got spanked big.
  22. s m from Canada writes: Even the New York media thought Roddick was out of line with his comments. It's one thing to be the class clown like Djokovic with his impressions and it's another to question one's sportsmanship. Roddick knows he doesn't have what it takes to be the top players so he trash talked and brushed it off like he was joking. Djokovic isn't a robot like Federer and Nadal doesn't know English well enough to make any impactful comments.
  23. Ryan M from Ottawa, Canada writes: s m - read the previous posts. Djokovic has admitted to having trainers come on just to kill time. Roddick called him out, and for the amount of joking around Novak does, he should have taken it better than that.

Mental fart to talk about the fans like that, too. If they didn't like him before, they certainly won't now.
  24. jethro bear from Canada writes: It is dumb to antagonise the fans, unless you can use their negative energy to pump yourself up (like Jonn Mac did). Novak is still a kid who hasn't matured as quickly as Rafa. I think also he inherited plenty of snotyy attitude from his parents, unlike Rafa's people who seem more humble (purely my speculation based on observations).
  25. Tom H from Edmonton, Canada writes: "They're already against me, because they think I'm faking everything."

    No, Novak, it's because you're a world-class douchebag.
  26. David Gehring from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada writes: Allan: true, Djokovic may be #3 and he may have beaten the best the odd time, but he is still a distant 3rd to Nadal/Federer and still has a terrible record against the other 2. To his credit, when he does lose, he does it with more grace than Roddick, who can even be sore when he's winning.
  27. The Iconoclast from Canada writes: Roddick is just another typical American sore loser.
  28. Rahim Jiwani from Canada writes: after all this it makes it all the more enjoyable watching Federer and Nadal on and off-court. There games are so fine tuned and their mutual respect for one-another is quite incredible too.
