John Smith from Canada writes: Mr Habs, lets start with what you neglected to mention. For example, Avalanche line-up in 2001 included Rob Blake, Ray Bourque, Peter Forsberg, Patrick Roy to mention some of Sakic's mates. First message, no single player can lead a team to Cup. Second, there is a long list of great players who sit in the Hall of Fame yet do not have their name on a Cup and no one would be silly enough to question their ability and leadership. Second message, dumb comparisons are just that, dumb.

Given our propensity to generate interesting scenarios, Joe and Mats would make quite an effective pair out in Denver (teamed with Ryan Smith) until Peter came aboard (assuming Avs' management made a clever trade or two to free up salary). Scott's comment about goal-tending looks right; the same econo-float as the Aebischer gamble. On 22nd thought, Colorado is probably trying to ice a product worth watching and Joe is a key attraction - his finale year. One of the classiest guys to ever play the Game, and it sure doesn't hurt to see he's in for one more round. The missing piece may be saving the leftover cap space for later in the season when Forsberg joins the Last Super.

Allan Martel from Canada writes: It is interesting to note the speculation about who will play with Joe in Colorado this season. Somewhere above reference is made to cap space and the comment is that there is no longer room to sign Forsberg.
This is not news to me as anyone in the know (and that's very few of you) knows where Forsberg is headed. His house offer has been accepted so it's just a matter of time.
As to the three team trade referred to by Hap Stokes, it includes swapping Al Arbour for Pat Quinn as former coaches and the creation of a Hockey Hall of Shame (in New York) with the first inductees being Al Eagleson, Gary Bettman, Todd Bertuzzi, Harold Ballard, and all current roster members management and coaches of the Newport Nightmares.- Posted 28/08/08 at 7:18 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

David Gehring from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada writes: I've always had a lot of respect for Sakic and it's great to see him back. I can still remember that one year playing for the Quebec Nordiques where he scored over 100 points and the next highest scorer was Michel Petit (a mediocre d-man) with around 36 points. Joe was all by himself on a really bad team but he still produced. It was the accumulation of high draft picks and some smart trades along with Sakic's maturation into a leader that turned the Avs into annual contenders. (Lindros for Ricci, Forsberg, Thibault, Thibault for Roy, Sundin for Clark then for Claude Lemieux, Nolan for Ozolnisch, etc.) Good times. Sakic may have been the number 2 centre after Forsberg during the Cup years, but he was still a special player that would have been the top liner almost anywhere else. He's old now but he'll be a great mentor for the up and coming youngsters in Colorado.

Moose Lion from Canada writes: David Gehring:
How was Sakic the number two centre during the cup years? I don't understand why this misconception exists:
Here are the facts:
In the fisrt cup win, 1995-96, Sakic had one of the all time great playoffs of any player ever (34 points in 22 games) compared to Forsberg's (22 points in 21 games) and was the third highest scorer in the league in the regular season (after Lemeuix and Jagr).
In the second cup win, Forsberg didn't even play the last two rounds of the playoffs. Sakic again led the playoffs in scoring, and was second in regular season scoring (118 points compared to Forsbergs 89) and won the regular season MVP that year and should have won the conn smyth as well.
I can maybe understand the argument that Forsberg had more pure talent than Sakic at thier peak. But Sakic was unquestionably the #1 centre in the two cup years.- Posted 28/08/08 at 1:16 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

So far, because the season hasn't yet started, we are tied for top spot with no losses and every player has a plus minus of zero - which about explains our chances at getting anyewhere once the season starts.
