Three Canadians move on at U.S. Amateur

Globe and Mail Update

Three Canadians have advanced to the second round of match play at the 108th U.S. Amateur championship in Pinehurst, N.C.

Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., won his opening-round match against Trent Sanders of Scottsdale, Ariz., 3 and 2 yesterday.

Seeded 11th among the 64 golfers who qualified for the match-play portion of the event, 20-year-old Taylor plays Kevin Marsh of Henderson, Nev., this morning in the second round.

The Hill brothers of Bright's Grove, Ont., also moved on at the Pinehurst Resort & Country Club's No. 2 course.

Graham, 22, dispatched J.C. Horne of Daytona Beach, Fla., 2 and 1. He'll next play Skip Berkmeyer of St. Louis.

Hill's younger brother, Matt, 19, was a 1-up winner over Jamie Lovemark, the 2007 NCAA champion from Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., who was considered a contender. Today, Matt will play Sihwan Kim, the 2004 U.S. Junior Amateur champion from Beuna Park, Calif.

The fourth Canadian in match play, Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, was eliminated in 19 holes by Mike McCoy of West Des Moines, Iowa.

Other winners yesterday were Kevin Tway, the son of PGA Tour veteran Bob Tway, and top-ranked amateur Danny Lee.
