The Toronto Blue Jays placed starter Dustin McGowan on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday with a sore right shoulder.
McGowan came out of Tuesday night's start against Baltimore after four innings complaining of soreness. He underwent a magnetic resonance imaging examination (MRI) Wednesday in Toronto.
The team is still awaiting results, but with the all-star break coming next week they've opted to play it cautious and rest McGowan.
"They've just got to let it calm down a little bit until they can evaluate it a little more clearly," general manager J.P. Ricciardi said of McGowan, who is 6-7 with a 4.37 earned-run average this season. "He's sore so we'll see how it plays out.
"I don't think he's going to be pitching in two weeks. I think it's going to be a little longer than that."
Reliever Brian Wolfe has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to take the roster spot. Wolfe has appeared in 15 games this season, recording an 0-2 record with a 3.60 ERA.
The loss of McGowan leaves Toronto's starting rotation in a bit of a shambles with right-hander Shaun Marcum already on the disabled list recovering from a sore elbow.
Ricciardi said that Marcum is on pace to return to the Jays following the all-star break and will likely pitch in the series in Baltimore that starts on July 21.
Manager Cito Gaston has had to make some significant changes to his rotation as a result of the injury pileup.
McGowan's next scheduled start was to be on Sunday in New York against the Yankees, but Gaston said he will now go with middle reliever Brian Tallet, who last started a game for the Jays back on August 7, 2006.
The tall left-hander is 0-1 with the Jays this season with a 2.83 ERA, although he's been a little rough around the edges of late, allowing eight earned runs over his last 12 innings.
"He probably deserves a shot at it," Gaston said. "You know, try to reward some of the guys that have been here and done some good things for us. Why not give him a shot at it."
Gaston said Tallet could wind up getting more starts depending on McGowan's future status.
Gaston has also decided to start John Parrish on Thursday in the series finale against Baltimore and bump by one day the next scheduled starts of Roy Halladay and Jesse Litsch.
Halladay will now get the start on Friday against New York in the first game against the Yankees, with Litsch going on Saturday.
