I'm sure going to the Detroit Red Wings school of hockey will help, but I question whether or not he's capable of providing a sustained effort throughout the whole season.- Posted 02/07/08 at 1:20 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Come on Detroit.....it's almost not fair!
Just because you have the best, brightest, smartest, goodest, brilliant, shapest, elite, organization in the NHL doesn't mean you should just go out there and sign people at will and at discount prices.
Don't you realize you are supposed to overpay? I know, the Fletch gave the Leafs the Finger, but you knew you wouldn't get Hossa-Hosed!
If this was the NFL, you'd get 15 yards for piling on! In the CFL-only 5 yards for illegal procedure!
Mats? He who hesitates is lost......but also filthy rich in the end! Did ya really want to play until mid June instead of April 9th? Paris is beautiful in April and May isn't it? I guess Stockholm is also. You would have looked good in a Detroit Swede Wings uniform!

Eric Hamilton from Edmonton, Canada writes: Great management and team success is self-perpetuating.... the greatest players will want to play for a great organization with the few precious years of playing time that they have.
That said, as an Oilers fan I'm glad Edmonton didn't land Hossa. That would have been the wrong move at the wrong time. We're not in a position of pushing for a Stanley Cup, and Hossa is more of a follower than a leader, not a game-breaker.- Posted 02/07/08 at 1:27 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

j wilson from vancouver, Canada writes: I really do believe there's something to the story that moving to the US is a problem for Sundin and his investments there. Is there an international tax attorney out there who can clarify?
Having said that, I think Sundin will go to a Canadian team, that it'll not be the Habs or Sens, and that it may still be the Leafs (especially since he sure didnt jump at the Canucks' 20 mil 2 yr offer.)
Then again, he might sign with Tampa for the league minimum in January. He's an odd duck, that guy.- Posted 02/07/08 at 1:31 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

J K GALBRAITH from Canada writes: Another brilliant move by Detroit! Hossa will stay interested for a year and then Detroit can use his money to resign Zetterberg and Datsyuk. Hossa and his agent must have calculated that his value increased with his strong playoff performance on a very good team. Playing for Detroit that has a really good chance to repeat as Cup champions, should increase his value even more next year. He will obviously be looking for
around $10 million a year when he hits free agency next year.- Posted 02/07/08 at 1:32 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Eric open your eyes buddy. Kevin Lowe almost had the 2nd Round winner last year. Only all those incredible amount of injuries kept the unknown baby Oilers out of the play-offs (even with all the AHL players) in 2008.
This year Garlic City may have to polish up the sign again. You know the sign that welcomes visitors. "Welcome To Edmonton The City of Champions"--This could be your 6th Stanley Cup Parade.

Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: Looking at the Wings' depth chart, they are positively scary. With Hossa in the fold, there are four lines who really can hurt you. They have all their defensemen back and some talent in reserve; Conks is a bargain behind Ozzy and they have Jimmy Howard in waiting. Scotty Bowman must be smiling right now as he gets out the silver polish.

They got him for 3.5m..... brilliant.
They also added Ty Conklin as a backup for Osgood at .75m... again ... brilliant.
Wondering who and how many youngsters are playing on the 4th line next year. Drake, McCarty, Chelios and Downey gone? Or do they keep them around as depth players.
What a team.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I kinda agree a bit. He'll make a nice 3rd liner. Looks like he saw the writing on the wall and there was only ONE TEAM that he saw that could give him what he wanted. Not Pitts., not Atlanta, not Ottawa. He's finally woken up to the truth. Only a Cup will mean anything and his best chance is with the Wings. The Wings may have overpaid a bit BUT that sure puts Sundin closer to retirement than playing hockey. I wouldn't be suprised to see Vancouver pull their rediculous offer for that tired old man.- Posted 02/07/08 at 10:29 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

desiderio manzanal jr from Laval, Canada writes: OK that almost feel like the season is over for the rest of the NHL team. But that does not work like that. Montreal finished first overall in their division and yet did not bring the same energy into the playoff. This season there will be many hungry teams and they will look at what detroit have been doing and will adjust to counter their effectiveness so the future is not yet set. They are looking good on paper.
Montreal...will have an exciting team this year. The player will be more seasoned and more hungry. They need one more brilliant player to add some punch and then they will once again rise to the occasion and challenge for the CUP.- Posted 03/07/08 at 12:29 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

I mentioned that a couple days ago, Scot, in reference to the no trade proviso he got. One more example of a first class player taking less than market value just to play for the Wings. I love it.
R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: And what's this rumour about Scotty Bowman going to the Chicago Black Hawks, Bill Weston...

Robert, that rumor was squashed almost as soon as it came out. Scotty himself reiterated that he's not going anywhere. I dont remember his exact words but the point was that he'd have to be nuts to leave an organization like Detroit. I concur wholeheartedly.- Posted 03/07/08 at 5:02 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Allan Martel from Canada writes: Mr. Loucks wonders:
"Drake, McCarty, Chelios and Downey gone? Or do they keep them around as depth players."
Well, since the Wings couldn't get Gary Roberts as their team leader to play on their 4th line, I guess they will have to choose from among this list of geriatrics. They could all play on the same 4th line for one minute per game or when the score is 8 to 0.
Could it be that some of the young guns might take on the leadership role by setting an example and keeping their traps shut? That would be a great example for poster on the endless Sundin stories to follow - wake me up when there's news.
Hossa has never made a playoffs contribution similar to his performance last season - I think he genuinely enjoyed himself and all cudos to him for opting for the Wings. My bet is that he will sign long term next year with the Wings also, by which time we will all be saying "Mats who?"- Posted 03/07/08 at 6:58 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Wilf Kruggel from Canada writes: I loathe those players that sign a one year contract, infact, if I were a team owner, that player wouldn't set foot in my arena as a team member as I think they are in it to see how much they can get out of the system, Hossa went to Pitsburg expecting to hoist the Stanley cup there. Now he's in Detroit for, probably for the same reason. I hope he will be disapointed once again.

Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: Those who think Marian Hossa is 'overrated' obviously didn't watch him in the playoffs. As for 'what he's done' (as if any one player can win a Cup), playing for the Thrashers doesn't exactly enhance a player's statistics. Just look at the difference between Ilya Kovalchuk's performance in Atlanta and with the Russian national team in last year's Worlds. Finally, this assessment from the hard-to-please sports scribes at The New York Post: "Hossa should fit in well with the Red Wings because he is a talented forward who also excels as a backchecker when opponents have the puck. He shed his reputation as a playoff underachiever by leading the Penguins with 12 goals, and his 26 points were a point short of matching Sidney Crosby's team-leading total." There's a very good reason the Sharks went out and got Blake and Boyle. The Big Red Machine got that much bigger with a Cup-hungry Hossa. Should be a spectacular battle between Detroit, San Jose and Dallas (with the addition of SuperPest) for Western supremacy this year.
