R J from Pickering, Canada writes: I don't follow hockey close enogh to know anything about Hossa other that the fact he just left a lot of money on the table because he wants to win.
Respect.
I'd like to think I'd do the same.- Posted 02/07/08 at 4:45 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Mike M from Toronto, Canada writes: I don't disagree with the idea that he went to the Wings because of the increased chance of winning, but I also think that Detroit's history of providing a great atmosphere for Europeans might have something to do with it as well.
To choose a couple of points of difference ... if you're Hossa, would you want your family to watch you on the CBC every Saturday night, where they hear Sour Grapes talk about how bad Europeans are, or would you rather have your family live South of the border and play for the first Stanley Cup winning team captained by a European?
Who does Edmonton have that's European? Hemsky? Anyone else that plays any significant role? It's not exactly Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Holmstrom, Franzen, Kronwall, Lidstrom, and Hasek.- Posted 02/07/08 at 5:59 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Chili Palmer from Calgary, Canada writes: Eric, I can't believe you compared the Hossa and Stuart K's. Hossa has the chance to win this year while putting up great numbers and then cash in with a 7 year deal a year from now--all while making $7.5 this year. It's hardly a sacrifice on his part. Stuart took below-market money for four years, and in doing so, likely has forgone a huge payday.

J K GALBRAITH from Canada writes: A Stanley Cup and a $10 million a year multimillion contract could make Hossa and his agent seem brilliant for making this move.

Jerry R from Canada writes: Wouldn't it be ironic if this is Edmonton's year for return to glory and THEY nab the Stanley Cup, lol.
As a side observation... have you SEEN his hottie wife... perhaps she didn't want to get into trouble and be reviled by a million people like Mrs. Pronger.- Posted 02/07/08 at 8:32 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

al rain from Calgary, writes: Lots of gushing for Hossa, his sacrifice, integrity, blah, blah. Don't count me on the bandwagon. For me, the players that are due respect are the one-teamers, the guys who dedicate to a club, a city, a community and make sacrifices through the lean years for the possibility of being a part of a winning team that they built, not a winning team that they jumped on at their peak. I'm impressed by Iginla who could have "broke the bank" in free agency as Hat put it in a recent collumn, but signed for, what now seems like peanuts (less than Brian Campbell!), and left $ for signing others. Calgary always has a shot at the Cup, but their anything but favourites. Yeah, players move around for all kinds of reasons, and not every club is worthy of that kind of commitment, but for my money I'll take the guys who stick it out, not cash in. Give me Iggy, Mario, Yzerman, Sakic, Lecavalier, Ovechkin, Brodeur. Heck, Mario went one further than not bailing on his team; he saved the team.
You can keep Hossa and all the rest of the opportunistic and cup-greedy.- Posted 03/07/08 at 12:26 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment
