The Flames had no such player on their roster and needed one to be able to buy-out players in the August buy-out window -- or else they could not participate.

    Clearly a cap management move, not a player move...the side effect is that Bourque (a journeyman with limited upside potential) will play on the 3rd or 4th line next year, stealing a spot from a young prospect.

    such is life in the age of the salary cap and complicated financial game the GMs play...

  3. Bill G from Calgary, Canada writes: Eric, that's an interesting perspective. I haven't seen any local sport writer document the issue. Be that as it may, the Flames have wanted to be bigger, stronger and faster for a number of years now. From what I've read, Bourque has speed to go with his 213 lbs. Greentree is about the same. Young Prust is about the only guy on the farm that might be able to play. So I'm thinking for a conditional second round pick, not too shabby!
