WorldCup 2010Soccer from Nauru writes: Why isn't the Whitecaps in the MLS...?
They seem to me the same as the MLS teams...
Considering that Whitecaps had 2 players away on trials in Denmark, this was a great victory...
You could see in the first half how the artifficial turf was causing problems again...
Good for the National team who doesn't want to play on it....- Posted 02/07/08 at 12:03 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

WorldCup 2010Soccer from Nauru writes: I think Canada is fine in this group...The games in Montreal and Edmonton should be "automatic" winners...
I am worried that CSA agreed to play an all important home game at the BMO field?
If you saw what the artificial turf caused in the first half of the TFC vs. Whitecaps game,if that happened to the National Team,it would be a disaster...
It's like playing NHL on "artificial ice"......There is a such a thing as well...
It slides,it is there,but it isn't "ice"...
Same with the BMO turf...
I just can imagine playing on it...Terrible.
In Europe, they use these "artificial turfs" to play outdoor in winter....That's all...
So,unless CSA has the qualification wrapped up,in their mind by then...move the game to Montreal,Edmonton or Vancouver...
Don't take this kind of chance for a WC qualifier....
Those 3 points may make it or break it...- Posted 02/07/08 at 1:26 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

SID VAN ABBEMA from Pickering, Canada writes: Fan ejected after final whistle. Not!!! This happened well before the final whistle and it was the assistant coach who was insisting the fan be removed. The fan, a regular season ticket holder, was shouting "you suck". Security was asked to remove him at the the assistant's urging.
TFC looked lifeless in the first half with the officiating putting its stamp on the match through out the second half.
Vancouver played a strong game and came to play. This will put a little jump in the whole championship tourney.- Posted 02/07/08 at 6:26 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Michael Peters from Toronto, Canada writes: Very disappointed with the FC's first half, although I kind of suspected as much would happen. The MLS boys thought all they had to do was show up. Oops. The FC have now gone at least 180 minutes with scoring a goal at BMO Field (0-0 draw v. Kansas City, 1-0 loss to Vancouver).

Vancouver doesn't even have a jersey sponsor!!!! The Caps came to play and TFC did not. I hope Carver works them hard this week. Good job VanCity, but we'll get you back in your town!

Gary Morris from Canada writes: John Carver's comment about the fan being ejected was simply untrue. I was sitting 3 rows behind the fan and 8 seats to his right so I heard what he was shouting. He simply was shouting "Carver, you suck". The behaviour of Carver and especially the assistant coach was ridiculous. The assistant told security to eject the fan. Soccer is all about passion. Since when are fans not allowed to voice their displeasure with the team or the coach?
John Carver and TFC owe this fan an apology!- Posted 02/07/08 at 12:04 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Johnny Canuck from Canada writes: Gary,
I was also in the immediate vicinity of the heckler. He was drunk and obnoxious. He deserved getting the boot. Once Carver had made all three subs what else did you expect him to do? There was nothing gained by the relentless badgering. Indeed Carver does not suck. He has taken our team of second rate players and given us success that we could only dream about last year. Carver, Guverra, Sutton, Brennan and Wynne are about the only bright lights these days.- Posted 02/07/08 at 12:29 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Gary Morris from Canada writes: Johny, I didn't see or hear anyone complain about this guy being drunk or obnoxious. I happen to agree with you re Carver. Personally I really like him and what he has done and will do for the team. However, the fact remains the fan was ejected for expressing his displeasure with Carver without using profanity or being threatening in any way. If we as fans are expected only to cheer and not express ourselves when we are unhappy with things then there is something seriously wrong.

Cruthin Clan from Brampton, Canada writes: All I know is after the first game against Montreal I said Toronto would lose to Vancouver and was ridiculed for it. The penalty may have been unjust, since it didn't really look like Brennan touched him, but I don't expect a rebound. Toronto will garner a tie at best in each of the next two games they play in this 3 team round robin.

Mary Gillmeister from Canada writes: "However, the fact remains the fan was ejected for expressing his displeasure with Carver without using profanity or being threatening in any way."
I beg to differ. He was seated 3 seats away from me. He appeared to be somewhat inebriated, was definitely disorderly, and spent a fair bit of time shouting about the officiating and the coaching for anyone who would listen. It became rather heated in the second half when he did in fact use a good amount of profanity directed personally at Carver, who made the mistake of engaging him in a shouting match prior to Security being dispatched into the stands. It was all a bit comical.
Frankly, the club played really poorly. There was a decided lack of pace, little attacking flair, and the lack of finishing in the final third was criminal! Vancouver played like a side who needed the victory, and did enough to earn it. Their 'keeper was excellent, and they deserved the win. I imagine TFC thought they could simply "show up" and do enough for a 1-0, but the (dubious) penalty put paid to that idea, and then they didn't seem to have any answers, even after the changes after HT.- Posted 02/07/08 at 2:26 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

David (withheld) from GTA, Canada writes: I guess being passionate about one's team is clearly justification to eject someone, especially for calling the coach out on it. I yelled "Carver, you suck" and frankly he did. What has he done to inspire the team? Nothing, rather he chooses to rant at the officials which he has done all season long, rather than support the boys out on the pitch and find ways to make them work together.
It was Carver who had me ejected or so I was told by the official who asked me to leave so I find it amusing that "Carver said one fan was ejected by security for "having a go" at him after the final whistle and voicing his disapproval. Carver said the team deserved the abuse, and he will do anything in his power to make sure the fan isn't punished."
I called him out on it, I identified myself, and I was ejected. John Carver needs to find better ways to motivate the team rather than ranting at the officials. I've witnessed him rant at the team on the bench, other coaches, heck he even yelled at on of the trainers for going out on the field to an player that was fouled and injured.- Posted 02/07/08 at 3:06 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Dave Hunt from Canada writes: TFC has a long, long..... way to go!!!!! If they think that they can just show up and defeat Vancouver or othe teams like Vancouver...they're mistaken---hopefully this game was a good lesson for TFC.
I agree with most fans---THE ARTIFICIAL TURF HAS NO BUSINESS IN SOCCER--IT ABSOLUTELY SUCKS!!! I'VE BEEN SAYING THIS SINCE DAY ONE.- Posted 02/07/08 at 3:59 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Johnny Canuck from Canada writes: David from Oakville,
After the 293rd 'you suck' it does get to be a bit annoying. Carver took us from the worst ever performance in MLS to top 4. I'm not complaining.
Perhaps if you mixed it up: 'Dichio you suck', 'Robert you suck', 'Edu you suck'. That would have been passionate and accurate.- Posted 02/07/08 at 4:18 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Bruce Henderson from Maple, Canada writes: I sit six rows in front of the person ejected. I did hear him shouting but, to be honest, I didn't exactly hear what he was saying. However, I did talk to him after the game because he was removed from the section but not the stadium. He told me that all he said was: "Carver, you suck". In my opinion, he was not inebriated. He was ejected with about 12 minutes left in the game. I was surprised that John Carver actually engaged the fan. He actually challenged the fan to meet him outside the stadium after the game. This was very unprofessional and I was disappointed. However, it did show me that John Carver was on edge and he definitely is passionate - something that many of his players lacked during that game. I like Carver's passion for the game, for winning and for TFC. I am very disappointed that TFC would eject a fan for criticizing the coach. What is going to happen if all the fans decide to boo the team? Will we all be ejected from the stadium. Canada is not a fascist state and hopefully, we are entitled to our opinions, even inside a soccer stadium. I believe that John Carver, the Assistant Coach and TFC should apologize to the fan. This was a "BIG" game for TFC fans. It was Canada Day and these are the Canadian Championships. To TFC fans, there is no game that ranks higher. The fans were more up for this game than any other this year and the fans were obviously more up for this game than the players. Unfortunately, many of the non-Canadian players did not realize the significance of this game. Jim Brennan sent an important message early in the game when he took on Martin Nash. It is too bad that many of his team mates missed that message. Jim Brennan was given a standing ovation by the fans who shared in his passion to win this important game. TFC players have got to realize how important these Canadian Championships are. They must win the two remaining games and all must play with the passion of Brennan, Sutton and Carver.

You actually said Vancouver was going to take the whole thing and then disappeared when they lost both games to Montreal and virtually took themselves out of the championship.
I don't think it was a matter of Toronto not taking the opposition seriously. The way they dominated the second half showed how different they are in class talent wise. Vancouver simply could not keep up with the TFC's movement in the second half when Toronto finally started to try. They will bounce back and win in Vancouver to set up a winner take all showdown on July 22nd against Montreal at BMO Field.
Of course it would help if we had some strikers in place before that time - people who can actually put the ball in the back of the net with some consistency. Some TFC staff didn't care for the officiating much either:

Coach rich from vancouver, Canada writes: Grass for a top level tiered team is awesome but the problem is who is going to pay for it. A grass pitch is costly compared to cost effective AT's especially when in the cause of BMO the public use the stadia too.
If the soccer club can afford their own stadia w/out local tax $ & CSA money than do grass otherwise expect to see AT's. Even Swanguard is going to be AT in the future as they make more $ from more users not just the Caps. Hence it's one of the best reasons to let the Caps build their own stadia has they will pay for the grass vs the taxpayer.
Verbal abuse in the stands like on pitch has no place in the game regardless if you pay or not. It's no more different than telling a parent to leave a public park when they can't control themselves & ruin the game for others. The home team or local committee is responsible for the control of the fans.- Posted 03/07/08 at 2:50 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

If the city wants pro soccer--then properly plan for it! Don't expect top athletes to give top performance on this crap!! (David Bechham said it, Landon Donovan said it---even the Canadian National team "said it" loud and clear--by choosing to play on real grass in Montreal instead of the carpet in Toronto--what else do you need?).
"AT thinking" is part of the poor political thinking that dominates this country. No vision, no class,--waste tax payers money on many, many, useless projects and build garbage for pro athletes!- Posted 03/07/08 at 9:00 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

B I from Toronto, Canada writes: The only positive I can take out of "Martin Nash Ruins Canada Day" as TFC website proclaims is that the July 22nd game is now very important and should be incredibly emotional for both sides - like all Toronto-Montreal games should be. I understand there are still some $55 tickets left for it at midfield, which makes for a nice break after work on a Tuesday night.

Why would these 2 fellows want to do this?
How much would it cost and why TFC needs them?
I realize that they know Mr. Carver etc....But is this the best way to spend TFC money?
These guys should go to Saudi Arabia and/or Japan, but TFC???
TFC will drain the pockets for basically nothing.
Each of them will need at least 200K CAD just to break even, considering how low the Canadian dollar is to the Euro and the Pound and TFC will have to trade young guys and the future for it?

A Banana from Canada writes: Well apparently there are some differences of opinion.
1) Yelling at a sporting event and using adjectives such as suck, does not mean you are drunk. I think some people were taken off guard with someone who actually decided to half-cheer at the game. Don't choke on your prawn sandwich...
2) Better to yell from the cheap seats as opposed to behind the bench. It makes the casual fans uncomfortable.- Posted 10/07/08 at 7:54 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment
