Howard Young from Canada writes: Hopefully this doesn't turn into another Theo Fleury situation. I genuinely wish him well, however, I couldn't help but notice how out if it he sounded during the phone interview with TSN. You compare it to his old interviews and it sounds like a completely different person.

d nicholls from kingston, Canada writes: This is atsonishing. What are they thinking? Don't they have enough money to pay someone to watch all 82 of his games? That'd saved them millions! The last 2 years his play has been competent AT BEST. He gets caught out of position in defensive situations so often that fans yelling at him during home games was commonplace throughout last year. His speed (or intensity) has diminished noticeably. He doesn't hit. He falls down so often in the corners that you'd think he's still wearing his skate-guards. Sure he has one of the best first passes in the conference & can neutralize a dangerous player along the boards on occasion. But he's regularly AWFUL. If he suddenly returns to form in NYC then all the power to him & damn Ottawa for mismanaging a great talent, but somehow I don't think this is the case. There's a real problem here. The rumours in OT have been rampant for years that he's not taking care of himself. Sometimes he looks like he's jet-lagged or doing his best Bela Lugosi impersonation. This signing has 'regrettable' written all over it...

Howard Young from Canada writes: The thing that would concern me as a Ranger fan is that Redden really wanted to stay in Ottawa and was prepared to take a hometown discount. However, he hasn't been able to play a solid game for the last several years. I think it was three years ago when his mother passed away. People contributed his poor play that year to the death of his mother. People expected to see him bounce back, but he hasn't done that.
He hasn't looked good since he had Chara as a line mate.
Regardless, he was a class act his whole career in Ottawa, I hope he finds his game. If not, the Rangers fans are going to pick him apart.- Posted 01/07/08 at 8:56 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Pat Billings from CDN, Canada writes: He could only muster 38 points while playing on a team with the best offensive line in the league.
I can't believe he's not taking a pay cut over a 6-yr deal. Sather has lost his marbles....maybe he's ready to replace Fletch next season.- Posted 01/07/08 at 9:40 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

J K GALBRAITH from Canada writes: Some people never seem to learn. Wade Redden has two significantly subpar years but is able to negotiate a contract for the same amount and is only about half a million less than what Brian Campbell as the top defensemen available signed for. Sather and the Rangers should be ashamed and the other two teams that lost out should be grateful that they did not actually over pay for him.

Cassandra from Ottawa from Canada writes: .
Howard Young, what bee do you have in your bonnett for you to write not just one but repeated malicious and spiteful posts so full of ignorence.
First Redden and Chara were not linemates, and Redden was a top denceman for the Sens before Chara came to Ottawa.
Redden is nothng like Theo Fleury at all, he is probably one of the classiest people playing the game.
Every year he has "Wades World" for kids from the CHEO, the local kids hospital. He has done so much work for the hospital in fact, that they asked to have a mural of him on one of the corridors. He is one of the foreomost players when it comes to community and charity work.
He was one of the elite players in Ottawa for most of his time here. The last two years he has not been as strong, after the death of his mother.
I hope and expect that he will rebound and the Rangers will have a great player as well as a class person.- Posted 01/07/08 at 11:25 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Mariposa Belle from Leacockland, Canada writes: I am disappointed that Redden is leaving Ottawa. I will admit that he seemed short of the fire that stoked his earlier days, but the talent (I think) is there.

Howard Young from Canada writes: Cassandra, if you are going to call me ignorant, at least have the courtesy to spell it correctly. I'm sorry, but this Sens fan does not wear rose coloured glasses. I commend his work with the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (for those readers unfamiliar with what CHEO stands for). However, at the end of the day this is professional sports and he is paid significant amounts of money to peform at a level equal to his compensation.

Crusty Curmudgeon from Ottawa, Canada writes: Cassandra -- although everything that you say may be true, and it may be that he could rebound -- but the take from the dressing room is that he tried as hard as he could to get his feet moving faster -- but just couldn't do it -- that tells me that the problems that he had in hockey were more than mental -- they were physical.
Whatever good he did for CHEO -- it does not mean that he should get that much money for what he does if he simply can no longer compete.
I do hope that it works out for him in NY -- but I doubt it.- Posted 02/07/08 at 7:31 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Stephen Dedalus from Canada writes: I like Redden, and I’m sorry he wasn&8217;t able to turn things around in Ottawa. However, he spent the past two seasons proving that he wasn&8217;t worth $6.5 million a year, which pretty much guaranteed that either the Rangers or the Islanders were going to offer him at least that much. (In fact, I&8217;m surprised that Ray Emery hasn&8217;t signed a $55-million contract yet with either NY team.) As for Campbell, good for him for cashing in, but I&8217;m guessing the Hawks are expecting him to be their Niedermayer. Ain&8217;t gonna happen.

Casey Circelli from Thornhill, Canada writes: Good player at $4-$5 million. The points come for him, but the defence side of it is weak, he's not physical, and is always the target of opposing forwards because he panics when rushed and doesn't take hits well.
This is on overpayment of epic proportions to say the least. If Redden returns to his career best year, he's still overpaid. If the last 2-3 years are proof that he's struggling with the new, speedier NHL, the Rangers will regret this one.- Posted 02/07/08 at 8:19 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Cassandra from Ottawa from Canada writes: Casey from Thornhill, you are off base, Redden has always been known for taking the hit to make the play and also for having ice water in his veins.
The real question is whether or not he has taken too many hits over the years that have affected his ability to make the play.
And considering the deals that went down on Tuesday,if he can come back to even close to his previous form,he will be well worth the pay.
Only a couple of years in the lock out he was picked as the best defenceman at the World championship and in Ottawa he was the lynchpin of the Sens offence as well as the defence, and the team struggled badly if he missed any games.
Last year was very poor, but there were numerous indications that he and Murray did not see eye to eye.
I hope that once in New York he will return to form.
Stephen Dedalus, don't be so hard on y0urself, but please let us know what the mysterious 8217 factor represents.- Posted 02/07/08 at 8:35 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

R. Carriere from Maritimes, Canada writes: I can see why the Rangers signed him. This is what the Rangers have on the back end signed for now!
Christian Backman- Dan Girardi- Marc Staal- Fedor Tyutin.
Not exactly all-star ballot names. Also, I read somewhere that Redden preferred to be out of the glaring Canadian sports media spotlight..........ah, New York?
While the Rangers fans are not as bad as Philly fans in general (they boo airplane landings....) they are tough and will hold Wade and that big contract accountable.
Sometimes a change of scenery is a good thing (Hasek from Chicago to Buffalo) Hope all turns out well and good luck for a rebound.....career, that is.- Posted 02/07/08 at 9:57 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

j q from Canada writes: All these comments and not one lament on Redden's selfishness for not waiving his NTC and allowing Ottawa to get something prior to him becoming an UFA! As for the deal, the expectations associated with $6.5m for 6 years in a place like New York could become a straightjacket. I wonder if Sather consulted with John Paddock before he signed Redden?

Cole H. from Toronto, Canada writes: R. Carriere, the Rangers don't have a defence comprised of all-stars but that defence an all-star, 3 time Vezina candidate goalie saved the Rangers from being abysmal last year. The vaunted offence couldn't put the puck in the net for the 1st half of the season & the Rangers had to win all their games: 1-0, 2-1, 3-2. If it weren't for the great play of their defence the Rangers probably would have just squeaked into the playoffs - maybe. Staal, Girardi & Tyutin all all very good defencers. Malik & Rosival are suspect but Rosi has a strong offensive game. The Rangers biggest, most glaring problem was that they desperately needed a good passer on the back end & Redden addresses that. In 1-2 years they'll have Bobby Sanguinetti back there & hopefully this Del Zotto kid they just drafted.

R. Carriere from Maritimes, Canada writes:
Cole H. from Toronto,: Agree! A great goalie sometimes skews the statistics of the other players and the true value.
I can remember watching Buffalo when Hasek was playing out of his mind. They made so many mistakes-took so many stupid chances-Hasek would make 10 saves that should have been goals-and the team turns around and scores 2.
Instead of being minus 8 for the night, these same guys walked away being plus 2. A little exageration, but I am sure you get the drift.
Evaluating defencemen when a team has a great goalie sometimes allows a GM to over-evaluate.
