New NHL, same old Red Wings

From Saturday's Globe and Mail

A lot has changed, but the principles Detroit employed in the old NHL seem to work just fine in the new world, too, David Naylor writes ...Read the full article

  1. Gordon Howe from HockeyTown, United States writes: Good article. It's all about management and the Wings have the best. Look at the Leafs. They've been hamstrung by poor management and the product on the ice shows that. maybe that's why they're after Ken and the boys. I don't think that they'll want to leave a winning situation for a losing one. The also don't kill themselves by overpaying for certain hockey players. You can't argue with success.

  3. John Stanton from Canada writes: too bad they cant sell out the stadium. Dont the Red Wings have their own forum?
  4. Howard Young from Canada writes: Too bad the ACC sells out no matter how bad things get.
  5. R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: Since their Cup win in 2002, the Red Wings have only managed to avoid a first round elimination in the NHL playoffs on two occasions and haven't even been to a Cup Final for the past five years.

However, let's keep up the pretense that they are somehow comparable to the 1980 Montreal Canadiens, the 1984 New York Islanders or the 1988 Edmonton Oilers.

In that way, a potential upset by the Pens will be that much sweeter.

    Cheers.
  6. Al Suba from Canada writes: Didn't the Russians win the final game in overtime and take the cup home with them? No? Aw shucks!
  7. Open Mike from Canada writes: 'They're not tough enough. Puck possession looks nice, but it's not working.' But we've stuck with it.'

Yeah, well, when tough = dirty and the referees actually earn their pay, puck possession's and puck skills what you've got left, baby. The Wings are smart in their management and on the ice. Other teams are beginning---just beginning, 'cos progress happens slowly in the ultra-conservative NHL if it happens at all---to figure out that the Wing's model works and being smart rather than tough may actually work better in the long term.
  8. John Stanton from Canada writes: Howard Young...how did this turn into a Leafs discussion? Give it up for god's sake.

R Miller....exactly. You'd think they were handing out medals for getting close.
  9. John Smith from Canada writes: R Miller from halifax, I scrolled up and down the article, thinking that somehow I was missing David's Naylors comparison to the Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders or Edmonton Oilers.' Could not find it and must conclude that you missed the point of the article. He is not referring to a 'dynasty' team and never uses such a word. He does not even make the claim that Detroit is the best team this year or in any way superior to the Penguins. What he is talking about is a team of consistent high performance.

So, to shift your black and white thinking, Detroit has only missed playoffs twice since 1983/84. And has been regular threat to win Cup (in spite of early play-off collapses) since the early 1990s. Where have the Islanders been during this time? How realistic has Edmonton been as a good team with the exception of a fluke year in 05/06.

So David Naylor's point is one should acknowledge Detroits success in a new era of hockey of free agency etc. You don't have to acknowledge the point, but for now you don't even understand the article and your comment is just irrelevant.

the product that the leafs put out there every night is terrible at best, yet you keep going back to watch garbage. what does that tell you about how smart toronto fans really are?
  11. Tom Sawyer from Canada writes: brian silva...genius that you are not. John Stanton bashed the Leafs in his comments and clearly doesnt go see them. R Miller is an avowed Senators and Canadiens fan and lives in Halifax.....when you can come up with intelliget commentary get back to us
  12. Forty One Years and Counting from Oinktown, Canada writes: Detroit may indeed have a well-oiled, tried-and-trued system going, but I believe it takes more than a system to win the Stanley Cup. The Cup goes to the team that not only wants it more, but does everything it takes, to the last gasp, to PROVE that it wants it more. In that regard, the Stanley Cup finals are a whole different breed of hockey game -- where skill, talent, discipline and training are raised to the next level by an intense infusion of heart and soul. The winners will be the ones who take nothing for granted and everything to heart.
  13. paddy o'reilly from Canada writes: The Ducks took out the Wings last year because Scott Niedermyer had the only effective strategy for Buttman Holmstrom. . push him sideways away from the crease like a bulldozer. . .it worked every time. No more garbage goals from the amazingly talented eurowings. This year I expect that any Pens defence man trying to employ that tactic will be called for interference and all the critical goals Detroit scores will be tainted.

What Holmstrom (and Franzen) does in the crease is cheap and classless.
  14. Jimmy's Lunch from Canada writes: Wings in 6, that's my call Sidney,,,, and when you're slapped, you 'll take it and you'll like it.

Wings are too solid this year for the young bucks to crack thru their defense. At the other end I'm predicting that Fleury will cave under pressure, and it will start in the first period when the clumsy land birds take dumb penalties and open up a shooting gallery on him.
At this point in time, the west is a stronger division overall.

Moneyline has the Wings at -170, the Pengs at 150.
  15. Jasper the Black Lab from Vancouver and Elsewhere, Canada writes: Well, at least we now know why the series did not start Thursday night: it is a (partially successful) strategy by the league to give Detroit more time to sell a couple more tickets. And: paddy o'reilly from Canada writes: _'The Ducks took out the Wings last year because Scott Niedermyer had the only effective strategy for Buttman Holmstrom. . push him sideways away from the crease like a bulldozer. . .it worked every time. The league wants Detroit to win the Cup to bolster the Wings franchise. Maybe they think Pittsburgh will have multiple chances to win over the next 3 or 4 years. And: John Smith writes: _'So, to shift your black and white thinking, Detroit has only missed playoffs twice since 1983/84. And has been regular threat to win Cup (in spite of early play-off collapses) since the early 1990s.'_ Kohn Smith is almost correct - the Wings have been a _presumed_ threat to win for the past 6 years. They have not been a genuine threat. Penguins in 6 games or fewer.

  17. Tom Sawyer from Canada writes: The last two games the refs were calling the Avery wannabes for goaltender intereference. Anyone in the crease will be called. People who claim the refs call penalties to influence games are a little silly.
  18. Tom Sawyer from Canada writes: OLD is the operative word in the headline.... Chelios 46 Drake - 39, Draper - 37, Holmstrom - 35, Maltby - 35, McCarty - 36, Lidstrom - 38, Hasek - 43, Osgood - 35.... and people think these guys can go deep in a series with a fresh Pittsburgh.... Pens in 6
  19. Hap Stokes from Canada writes: Tom Sawyer from Canada writes: OLD is the operative word in the headline.

Tom Boy lot's of us Old Goats are still Viagra operative well past the mid-80's nowadays Sonny.

You seem to know some things about hockey little boy, BUT if you want to watch a real tough 'Old Time' hockey player; keep you eyes tuned to what Kris Draper (aged 37) does ESPECIALLY without the puck. He plays along the defensive lines that genius Bob Gainey played back before your daddy thought thoughts about your mommy Tom.

Don't worry about being stupid Tommy, I was that way when I was just a kid too. Well at least we are both on the same side concerning this series and Sidney the Kidney. Have Fun Tom--CIAO

When's the last time Montreal or the Oilers win the Cup?? Nuff said.
  24. brian silva from Canada writes: Gordon Howe >>> you're absolutely right - they don't f'n get it. the leafs are losers, have always been losers, and will most likely continue to be losers as long as they continue to fill those stands while the product is cr@p at best. so what other type of response could you expect from your typical Canadian - yeah, Detroit may be winning consistently, but we continue to fill our stands consistently, because we're too dumb to stay away when our team(s) is/are cr@p.
  25. Ricky for a Centrist Canada from Canada writes:
    Early observations:

Pens seem to be faster up front, but so far the Wings' D is handling it with smarts and hard work.

    Osgood looks great.

Terrible goalie interference call to wave off the first goal by Detroit. Holmstrom is becoming the Rasheed Wallace of the NHL - gets a lot of undeserved attention. Holmstrom's stick isn't interfering with Fleury on the play.

Bob Cole is calling a great game.
  26. Michael Mitchell from Canada writes: Ricky, sorry. Bob Cole = "mute" button.
He totally missed the waving off of the goal. We could see it at home. Couldn't you?
    Pens look fast, yes.
  27. Ricky for a Centrist Canada from Canada writes:
    Oh please.

He got it a couple seconds after.

The rest of his play calling has been terrific and accurate.

Go stroke your Mike Emrick doll, you tool.
