Germany names uncapped keeper to Euro squad

Reuters

BERLIN — Germany coach Joachim Loew named goalkeeper Rene Adler and winger Marko Marin, both uncapped, in a 26-man provisional squad for Euro 2008 on Friday.

The 23-year-old Adler is one of a group of outstanding young goalkeepers in the Bundesliga and joins first choice Jens Lehmann and Robert Enke on the flight for a training camp in Mallorca starting on Monday.

Timo Hildebrand, the third-choice keeper at the 2006 World Cup, missed out.

Marin, 19, had a spectacular season in helping Borussia Moenchengladbach win promotion back to the top flight.

The other surprises in the squad were experienced striker Oliver Neuville, also of Gladbach, and Real Betis winger David Odonkor, who retains his place from the World Cup.

Germany are in Group B for the June 7-29 tournament with co-hosts Austria, Croatia and Poland.

The deadline for the final 23-man squad is May 28.
