TORONTO Toronto FC head coach John Carver said Thursday that his club continues to look for another striker.
"We're looking for those other ingredients we need to take it on to the next level again." Carver said Thursday after the club trained at BMO Field in preparation for Saturday's Major League Soccer match against the Columbus Crew.
One of those ingredients is a goal scorer.
"I think we need a guy who's going to guarantee us 20 goals," Carver said. "But let's not forget the job that Danny Dichio has done. I think he's done a fantastic job. And Jeff Cunningham has not had an opportunity because of the job that Danny has done ... but I'd be mad not to say I wasn't looking for another striker."
TFC does have depth on the back line but Carver said he does not want to make trades at this time.
"I'm not interested in trading anybody at the moment until our circumstances change," Carver said.
If the club were to sign a new player, for instance, a trade might be needed to create roster space.
"But as it stands at the moment for out senior side, I'm not even interested (in making a trade)," he said. "The one thing I will do as soon as I am interested in doing it I'll tell the player straight away. I won't mess about."
Carver was back home in England last week and when he was there was also able to do some networking. This is the time of year when there are players available there who are out of contract.
TFC has not played since a 1-1 draw against the New York Red Bulls on May 1 and now plays five games in two weeks. It could also lose some players to international duty during that time and beyond.
TFC captain and defender Jim Brennan, who also frequently plays for Canada's national team, said on Thursday he feels that MLS should try to adjust its schedule for teams that stand to lose players for international fixtures.
He said an MLS team that is going to lose more than one player for a game to international duty, for instance, should have its game re-scheduled.
