  1. Marcel Dionne from United States writes: Uh oh, dont look now - the old guys just got older, no more playing butt games in the crease, and Detroit isnt invincible. Gutty game by Dallas - finally.
  2. Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: Even though the Wings outshot the Stars... this was Detroits worst game since the Nashville series.

They gave the puck away too much and for at least half the game just didn't seem into it.

The ref calling off that goal actually seemed to get them going... but the Stars got lucky.

Nice goals (all) by the Stars but Detroit should have had 3 more.

The worst part about it is it probably negates a Stanley cup presentation in May (for the first time since 91 (thx Matt O)).

Oh well... my bet is another 8 to 2 finish in Detroit.... just like they finished off the Avs.

    Cheers
  3. Mariposa Belle from Leacockland, Canada writes: Good high tempo game. Dallas finally found some reserves to fight in the series.

It does look like a one-game wonder for the Stars - The formerly known as the Dead Things should close this out at the Joe.
  4. Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: Mariposa;

Did you catch the post/bet between Martel and I? He is accusing you of being a little too much in love with your scotch bottle me thinks.

    lol

He emailed it to me... so I can repost if you missed it.

    Cheers
  5. Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: Allan Martel from Canada writes: Scot Loucks asked for a bet and one has been offered. It is an unusually structured bet, but then again, coming from 3M, everything is a bit unusual. So the wager is a pint and a plate of fish and chips to be consumed at the location of the loser and paid for by the loser. As a major concession, I will be in Toronto for the evening of June 18th and I am prepared to ingest my free beer and nosh on that date in the fair city itself so as to prevent Mr. Loucks having to travel to Ottawa should he win this bet. I also like the posting idea that Scot raised and I am prepared to include that element as part of this wager. Now Scot Loucks is normally quite clear but I am still not certain that he has taken up my challenge. He should do so by responding to this posting, or suggest modifications to the proposal that are acceptable to both parties. I would suggest that Mariposa Belle hold the funds in trust except that I fear her prediliction for single malts might get the best of her, leaving nothing in the kitty once this issue is decided. Posted 14/05/08 at 2:39 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment ---------------- Of all the 3m's Mariposa.... I have confidence in your pick as far as Detroit schooling the Pens in the next series. Cheers
  6. Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: Apologies on the last post... blame the globe.... it started as paragraphs.

I did accept that bet and am looking forward to sharing pints and dinner with and on Mr. Martel on June 18th.

Neil (no more last name) has offered to join us to ensure full payment and to check out our ugly mugs.... little worried about that one.

    Cheers
  7. Popeye Dillon from North Vancouver, Canada writes: I knew the Stars would win one on the sloppy sheet they call ice. Either of these teams could knock off the Eastern divison in four. I hope this isn't the best we've seen yet.
  8. Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: Afraid it is Popeye.

Pittsburg / Philidelphia was my last hope for a good series. Next best hope was a Stanley Cup awarded in May instead of June.... thanks to tonights Dallas win that won't happen either.

    Cheers
  9. Mariposa Belle from Leacockland, Canada writes: Scot - 3Martel is slightly envious of my casual aquaintance with the finer things in life. The ship is designed to repel such envious attacks.

Bets, beers and fish and chips aside, we are looking at a Wings-Pens final. Which is not a bad thing, considering that we could have Atlanta vs. Nashville competing for the Best Team in the Dominion.

I do love watching the Stanley Cup playoffs - this is the toughest trhophy to win in any sport.
  10. Marcel Dionne from United States writes: Watch the Pens win the Cup Scot esp if Dallas wins another. Improbable of course but so was tonights win. Penguins can match and exceed Detroit for speed and talent. They are tougher and will wear down Detroit and then injuries hit Detroit and lights out.
  11. R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: Marcel Dionne from United States:

Please let them keep underestimating the Pens, Marcel...

BTW I love that term, "schooled" that Loucks keeps using in reference to the finals...

    Cheers.
  12. Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: For the record (3M wise). (Does Marcel count as a 4th M?)

I am cheering for the Pens in the finals. I always cheer for the underdog.

As someone who pretends to know something about the game.... I am picking the Wings in 5.

    Cheers
  13. Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: I will add on to my last post in answer to the question (which nobody posed) why?

The Pens are playing the same type of game right now that Dallas used to beat the Ducks and the Sharks. They are collapsing back in front of the net and chipping the puck out. No?

The Wings have played a puck control game thru the entire playoffs. They don't give the puck away.... they will pass the puck backwards and look for another route thru the defense. They will pass the puck around the 5 man collapse.

If Franzen comes back it will be over in 4.

    Cheers
  14. Mariposa Belle from Leacockland, Canada writes: Scot, Allan and Neil - wonderful idea, leaving Miller the Insufferable gnawing on undercooked lobster shells in NS while we sort out the coaches for next year.

Mariposa has a minor problem with the date, the spouse claims we were married on the same date 25 years ago.

Can't dispute it, as my memory is pretty hazy regarding the event.

However, if the meeting is designed to distribute GMs and Coaches to make a difference in the NHL, count me in - 3Martel's insinuations about infatuations for quality products notwithstanding.
  15. R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: 4M???

    Hmmm....

Well, we are branching out and trying to go Global after our planned hostile takeover of MLS&E....

Adding a former King is never a bad idea either.... Will also bring the voting members of our board up to 3 Pens - 1 Wings...

I think we were OK with the copyright on the name 3M, but I am going to have to check whether the name 4M is taken by anyone yet...

    Cheers.
  16. Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: Miller ... the biased 3m/4m's may well be leaning towards the Pens... (it does rhyme with Sens).... but as the ancient (oldest) observer I believe my vote (and prediction record) counts for more. :)

    Wings in 5 :)

    Cheers
  17. Hap Stokes from Canada writes: Alright where is the Wolverine 'cheering section' tonight?

Give us all your X Qu ses (Gordo n Bill)
  18. R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes:

"As the ancient (oldest) observer I believe my vote (and prediction record) counts for more."

Of course, you are going to vote for the old guys, Scott...

So far, the Pens have only lost one game in the entire playoffs so how do you think that they are going to lose 4 in 5 games against the Wings ?

I still believe that we haven't seen the Pens at their best because they have never really been challenged that much by any of their previous or current opponents.

Have you noticed how competitive Malkin and Crosby can get when they are mad?

Anyways, both the Pens and the Wings still have to win their fourth game of these current series...

    Cheers -- Gotta go.
  19. Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: Hap Stokes... I was just going to type the same thing.

I guess it's kinda like the Flyer fans that disappeared... and the Habs fans and the Sens fans.. blah blah blah.

So much easier to type comments when your team wins.

    Cheers
  20. Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: Robert; Read my post from 11:55pm

    Thats why...

    Anyway.... I'm outta here too.

    See you in the A.M.

    Cheers
  21. John Nicholson from Oshawa, writes: Dallas was due to win a game. They got all the breaks tonite and took advantage of the ref's inventive calls. The Wings did not play for the first half of the game and then could not put their chances in for the 2nd half. On to Detroit to wrap it up at home.
  22. R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: Former 3M Belle:

That's OK... Leaving me out of the feast of "Toronto cod" for a meal of "undercooked lobster shells" will only make me more insufferable in the future...

BTW The board of 4M just had a vote and no Wing supporters allowed... Your bags are at the receptionists desk in the main lobby...

Marcel Dionne -- welcome to our new 3M Pens party.

    Cheers.
  23. dan vanman from vancouver, Canada writes: Scot...I think where the Pens will differ from Dallas is that they have the talent to hurt Detroit more than the Stars do.

They are quick and young, and have shown in previous series that they even like the physical play.

The system they use is the same as the Canucks use, as Therrien and Vignault coached together in Montreal.

It is puck pressure and defensive responsibility, but the system is all about getting the puck and doing something with it.

Which is where the Pens have it waaaay over my Canucks.

They have the transendent talent to "do something" with the puck.

Oh, and I think Fluery is playing better than Osgood too.

If I lived closer, I'd be trying to get in on that bet.

Can you just Fed Ex the fish and chips when the Pens win, and if the Wings do...I'll send something back that is indicative of the West Coast!
  24. Matt O from Canada writes: Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes:

    =============================================

No problem...Duhatschek seems to think that even if the conference series go 5 that the cup could be presented in May, if you have a look at his latest article.

That would probably presume a short final series...Pens in 4 or 5, I imagine (sorry, I have to against your call on that one...maybe I should get in on this bet you have in the works).
  25. Bill Weston from Grand Rapids, MI, United States writes: Hap Stokes and Scot Loucks.. haha. In my own defense, Ive never posted after the game. Always waits til the next morning. A fair weather fan I am not.

What can a Wings fan say? I agree with Scots original comment that the Wings just didnt look like they were really into it tonight. Too much warm weather? I dont want to take away anything from Dallas though in what was definately their best game of the series. Kudos to that line Tippet put together to play against Zetterberg/Datsyuk/Holmstrom. I originally picked the Wings in 6 so I may not be far off with that. Wonder of wonders, Turco actually won his third game ever against Detroit! Zubov showed up too, finally.

Now, that said, the officiating was.. "questionable" at best. Homers butt was in the crease? Puleeze. Another very quick whistle on the Wings goal where Turco took the puck into the net with him too. But, like Babcock said, "thats life." Back to the Joe now.

    Go Wings!
  26. Proud Canadian from Canada writes: I knew it, I knew it. Brooms all over the world are used to sweep with, in Detroit, they are used for witchcraft. And man, do they have a few witches in Detroit. The city of Oz. Scotty, dont bet the house, I'd hate to see you live on a bench near the beaches.
  27. Proud Canadian from Canada writes: Where's the yapper Howe this morning? Out golfing? Out for coffee with his friends on Fort Street. No comment Howe, where's your expert analysis. U seem to be quick berating other teams, now lets hear the expert opinion on your team last night please.
  28. Sissy Schuss from Canada writes: Looks like Holmstrom's rear end finally caught up to him
  29. Bill M from Canada writes: When did the NHL start calling in the crease again? After watching goals scored with palyers sitting on top of goalies the last few years, I thought that rule didn't exist anymore. After seeing the replay of the one called off last night, I can only assume the league hired the replay judge fired by the IIHf the other day.
  30. Sean O'Reilly from Canada writes: I had almost forgot that the wings do lose here and there, LOL!

The wings played their worst game since round one, and its not that they were even that terrible. The first they looked horrible, and had to kill three penalties, which was their best part of the game. The second they dominated, and we all know of the call. Nothing kills a team like a call like that and a period that ends with a last minute goal. They came back in the third, but it was never meant to be.

Back to Detroit for game 5. Dallas won, but the wings were in it to, and as a fan that is the least you can ask for. Its not like Dallas was far and away the better team, they were able to finally play their grinding game.

If the first goal counts for the wings, that game plays out differently. It didn't and NBC has a game Saturday.
  31. Gordon Howe from HockeyTown, United States writes: Well just as I thought yesterday the referees offered up a stinker. The Wings didn't play that well either but when Morrow takes the armpit out of a guy in the first couple of minutes then looks right at the ref expecting a call and doesn't see the arm up? There you are and there you go. They even got the linesmen involved on an offside 2 on 1 by the Wings and it was clearly onside the ref blows it down. Well I've got my tickets already for game 5. Bettman was in the audiance for that fiasco of game calling so I suspect he would have a chat with the officials. I don't mind guys getting called if they've done wrong but being too onesided is one thing. Anyway it's over saturday. This is my first and only prediction.
  32. Marcel Dionne from United States writes: Let's agree to not whine about the referees for once in all of our lives. It's part of the game. Bums in creases will be called. Get over it. The NHL doesnt like players like Sean Avery and the Euro version getting in the goalies faces and they are acting. There will be supposed missed calls on both sides but let's try to be mature and discuss the actual play. Dallas got its physical game going and Detroit couldnt handle it. We'll see what Saturday brings, referee calls and all.
  33. Frank Smith from Canada writes: I heard a rumour that Avery was going to sign with the Canucks ... :-)
  34. j wilson from vancouver, Canada writes: Staal, Crosby and Malkin are all excellent at stripping the puck off the opposition, and with their speed, Detroit's puck possession game will have to change to include fewer passes.
Now, Detroit is capable of doing this. However, they won't cakewalk the Pens.
Watch for the Detroit goaltending to become an issue in the finals as well.
  35. Wilf Kruggel from Canada writes: This Detroit team does not look natural, as when they skate to the bench, their faces show it all with the quick twitching and contortionist movements, why? Pluss, those 40 year olds skate like 18nyear olds?? Wilf
  36. Trilly B from Canada writes: I didn't realize that crease airspace was a no-fly zone. Even then, wasn't it Holmstrom's REAR end? :)
  37. Gordon Howe from HockeyTown, United States writes: Trilly B from Canada writes: I didn't realize that crease airspace was a no-fly zone. Even then, wasn't it Holmstrom's REAR end? :) ___________________________________________________________

I agree. That's a new one on me and the rule book. There's only one plain in hockey and that's the goal line. No feet in the blue means nobody in the crease. So if he's one foot outside the crease and the goalie comes out what happens then? Oh well it's over time to move on to game five, and Sean I guess I was right last nite???
  38. Bill Weston from Grand Rapids, MI, United States writes: Not so easy to just move on tho, Gordo. We both know Homers not going to change the way he plays. So the next time his posteriors in a goalies face, is it going to be a penalty or not? Was this like Babcock says, the ref just blew the call? Or was it a payback from the goal that counted when his skate WAS in the blue? Do the refs make up for one mistake by deliberately making a second one? Again, like Babcock said, if its a penalty, call it.. just dont go making things up. So, just like Riberos two handed slash on Osgood where he got off with just a fine, what happens the next time a player does that? Does Homer get called when he's three feet in front of the net? Two feet in front? One foot? They open a can of worms with this stuff when theyre inconsistant.
  39. Trilly B from Canada writes: Gordo, Bill, that call brought back memories of that terrible season where skate laces in the crease drew video reviews. This was the worst goal wave-off I've ever seen, playoffs or regular season. Slo-mo or real time, it's a goal.

That said, I'm glad the series wasn't a sweep. I can't get enough playoff hockey!
  40. Proud Canadian from Canada writes: Well Howe, ur something else. Everyone else has pansies and the sort, your blaming the refs. What next for Mo Town. Ur team lost, eat crow. They are no more human than any other team. Pittsburg will eat them in the finals, eat them. Chew them up and spit them out.
  41. Proud Canadian from Canada writes: Howe, maybe you should get a dictionary or learn the context of certain words and their spelling..For instance "There's only one plain in hockey and that's the goal line". Plain is not the correct spelling for the word. Go find it and correct your posting. A bit of a lesson for you to be more correct when posting.....
  42. Gordon Howe from HockeyTown, United States writes: Well Bill I guess if it was an even up call, well it's all even now right? That's just one of many blown calls last night. I don't mind getting called for penalties when we deserve it, but you have to call them evenly. That games over now, time to move on. I'm sure that game will be be put under the microscope along with the refs. It has to be because the commish was there, and the next day all the sports programs were yakin about the missed goal. I wouldn't be suprised if there are more reviews after that debacle. I'm looking forward to saturday now, big time.
  43. Bill Weston from Grand Rapids, MI, United States writes: Gordon, I guess we'll find out tomorrow then what happens when Turco resumes his love affair with Homers posterior.
