Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: A textbook Wings victory. Dallas has some very serious problems finding the net if tonight's game is any indication. Right now Turco's excellent play is the only reason they're even close. Even Morrow was guilty of a bad and ill-timed penalty. The Wings can strangle you with defense. One thing that was really impressive was the precision of Detroit's passing. Osgood was just about air-tight. Maybe the Stars can find some cactus juice back in Texas. They'd better.

I didn't see the game, what did he do? I'm sure Enrico Ciccone will be happy as he ripped a strip off Ribeiro on Radio-Canada's 'La Zone' last night for comments Ribeiro made in the Journal de Montreal.
By the way, I hope one of the 'P' teams wins and not one of the 'D' teams. Dallas had a paltry 10% of TV sets watching the last game against San Jose. If that had been a Canadian team it would have been a minimum of 40% and possibly above 50%. And Detroit fans take their team's success for granted. There were hundreds of empty seats last game and it was like that all season despite having the best record in the league. Time for a new team to win. Hope it's Pittsburgh.- Posted 10/05/08 at 10:02 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: For those who missed it, right after the final buzzer Ribeiro swung his stick across the top of the net and bent it it across Chris Osgood's upper body. (Versus showed the bent stick being picked up by a ref!) A stupid and useless gesture, with Ribeiro already losing the majority of his faceoffs, he may hurt his team even more. PS good to see someone picked up on Cherry's primitive anti-European comments. The NHL is a truly global league, and hockey fans should be proud.

What in the heck are you talking about? 'bent it across' ??? get some glasses! It's a composite stick, they might bend while force is applied to them, but as soon as the force is gone they snap back ....... otherwise they just snap period. Bent stick my @ss, get some glasses! I watch the replay a good five times and you can't even tell whether the stick even bent while in contact with Osgood's chest protector.
On the other hand, watching that clip a couple times one can clearly see Osgood's 'sneaky little butt end' to Ribeiro's head when he skates past the net as Bob Mackenzie puts it, followed by the mother of all soccer style dives by Osgood!
Ribeiro's retaliation was stupid, but quite frankly if he gets suspended, so should Osgood for instigating the whole affair with a move that was just as intentional and dangerous as Ribeiro's!! More often than not the cheap shot that prompts relation doesn't get called, just the poor sap who retaliated, but in this case if we're going to review video to determine punishment let's take into account the FULL event and give both boneheads what they deserve, might reduce this kind of crap in the future!- Posted 11/05/08 at 2:56 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: For all those who deem the incident controversial, here are the facts: The Versus footage showed the incident as follows. Ribeiro hit Osgood with his stick across the chest. Osgood went down. Versus did show footage of Ribeiro's bent stick being picked up by a referee. Versus showed footage of Ribeiro skating past Osgood's net, appearing to touch the end of Osgood's stick. Osgood said in the press conference that Ribeiro may have skated through his stick and Osgood had no intention of butt ending him. Draw your own conclusions. And most of all, have a nice day.

Its still to early to predict a Cup victory but if it should happen, Detroit will handle the parade just fine, thank you. R Miller from Halifax; back out the ages of Chelios, who shows no signs of slowing down, and Hasek, who isnt playing, and tell me what the average age is. Age wont be a factor if it comes to the finals. Again, Dallas mouths all the cliches about needing to do better next game but neglects the fact that the Red Wings just make that very, very hard for a team to do. Look at all the claims from the Stars about how they were going to do better on the faceoffs last night and then look at what happened. The hit of the game has to be Drakes hit on Robidas in the 1st period. Man, he lined him up and dropped him like an anvil, open ice! Now, who was it was going to physically intimidate these Wings? Oh, thats right.. Nashville, Colorado, and especially the Stars! As for Ribeiro, yes he deserves a suspension. From the way I saw what led to it, Osgood had absolutely no intention of butt ending anyone. When Ribeiro made contact with Ozzies stick, Ozzy was facing the other way! In the postgame Osgood seemed genuinely surprised about the whole incident. He added that when Ribeiro slashed him, he/Ozzy was turned slightly and took a good portion of the slash across his side, not his chest. The Wings wont issue a payback this series I dont think, but next year... paint a target on Mike Ribeiro. And as for the Mule, Franzen only took that spot on the second line when Dan Cleary went down earlier in the season with a broken jaw. Now Cleary takes it back. Thats the depth of these Red Wings. Go Wings!!

Tom that could very well be, but you can't hit what you can't see. They've been doing some of that but Ott is so clumsy that he can't make the sharp cuts needed to hit a moving target. He's fine if he lines you up from behind but hitting head on he can't handle that. I'm predicting that before this series is over that Ott or Morrow will meet their doom at about the red line in the form of #55. Maybe neither of these two have the nuts to travel through center ice though. I noticed that last night when 55's on the ice those two never went through the center looking for a pass. You can make plenty of arguements about a but end, Osgood selling it, and whether it should or shouln not be a suspension. The only thing I can say is Ribero wound up and took a swing at a player, to me its the intent of the action. I am always amazed that unless a player gets injured, the victim is made the scape goat. He sold it, he is wearing goalie equipment. In order to eliminate stupid actions like this, a message has to be sent. On to the game, Dallas and showed up and played there game, they grinded it out to put themselves in position to steal one. Problem was, Detroit can match them. Again, the officiating was brutal at times, how you miss a punch to the back on a guys head, obvious hooking, I don't know. Wings won, on to Dallas and game 2! And as wing fan, so thanful to that the games will start at a reasonable time. Go wings!

Isn't it nice when you have all the facts? OK...let's play hockey!

John Stanton from Canada writes: Gordon Howe - you must have a red wings den or something. You seem a little over the top. Enjoy the run until the old men run into the Penguins.

Bill Weston from Grand Rapids, MI, United States writes: Hap Stokes from Canada writes: Hey Bill what do you mean by The Original Six?
That would be a reference back to the days when the NHL consisted of Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, Montreal, NY, and Boston. With only six teams, maybe 20 roster spots per team, you had to be awfully good to get the chance to play back then. Not a lot of room for marginal players.
As for Ribeiro, yeah I thought he deserved at least a one game suspension but Im not going to whine about the fact that he didnt get one. I doubt the Stars will be that undisciplined tonight. If the Wings win tonight though, look out for game four.

Proud Canadian from Canada writes: Gordon, just do the American thing. Give us your arrogant and ignorant total dub on the Dead Wings. Let us have it. Tell us Canadians how great your team is. We have no clue over here how great your team is and how great your city is. Give us all the information in 2000 characters or less. Im not well versed on that city across the border, give us the great details, tell us the attractions to see, the new housing developments, the whereabouts of the downtown core, all the amenities that come with Detroit and its people. Please, also mention Mr. Kilpatrick, your wonderful honest mayor. Dont forget him. Thanks.

John Stanton from Canada writes: Bill W - The irony is Osgood started with a butt end. If he had done it at the beginning of the game, then Dallas might have actually played with some emotion and edge which is the only chance they have to win. Detroit plays the old man game of little jabs and pushes to incent retaliation then skate away. A team that plays against them needs to rub their faces in the glass, bang them, initiate the rubs, shoves, etc. and get them retaliating. Do it enough and the old men will get cranky and break or just break. Expect Roberts, Ruutu, Talbot, Kennedy, Malone, Orpik, etc. to deploy this energy. Should be a great Cup final with Pittsburgh.

John Stanton from Canada writes: If anything, this will be a Canadian (Pittsburgh) vs. Sweden (Detroit including their captain - no Stevie Y, hmmmm) Cup Final.

Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: The 'rubbing and shoving of old men' strategy proposed by Mr Stanton has been noted by Stars' management (who, I am told, read these posts assiduously). They have, therefore, asked The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders to suit up for Game Three.

John Stanton from Canada writes: and because it will be in Dallas, the workers will be able to insert viagara into the Detroit water bottles to provide the necessary catalyst for this strategy!

Gordon Howe from HockeyTown, United States writes: The triumverate of Hens fans is complete with the arrival of the hockey ingenue Mr. Stanton. Yes he, as well as the loud troll realise all of the foreign born players on the Wings. Not to say that there are any on the Ottawa Egg Layers. There #1 boy Daniel Heatly who is ripping up the Worlds as we speak is of German decent. I wonder how he felt taking on the Faaderland the other day. Yes when the loud troll has lost his team to ignominy he resorts to the last gasps of an ignorant man. The attacking of anothers country, while all along working in the country he so despises. I'm sure there is some irony there someplace. Maybe it's in the loud ones sleeper. Be that as it may I'm happy for my Wings and extatic for their hard work ethic. It takes two way hockey to win games. You can't take time off. It takes great coaching. You have to be prepared. It takes great management. You have to have the product on the ice. So far so good for the Wings. With any luck we'll be facing Pittsburgh in the final. It would be a great series. I'm impressed with Crosby and the bunch of kids they've assembled. They've also have a good work ethic, coaching, and management. There's some teams that don't have any of the above. That's why they're stting on their hands at home.

Tom Sawyer from Canada writes: Gordon, it's impressive that you can postulate here while holding down the day job delivering Little Caesar's ;-)
Bang on about the loud canadian esp. his moaning the US where he works...but he does bring you garbage so maybe that is satisfying to him?!
Many of these people here are indeed Ottawa Pouter fans. They can only watch and dream of a day that will never happen. Heatley is scoring because he has linemates that actually know where the corners are to feed him pucks unlike the pansies he plays with in Ottawa.- Posted 12/05/08 at 9:14 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Proud Canadian from Canada writes: Gordon Howe, incomplete answer. I know, the rest of it I can not answer because there is no answer. B T W, in the SW of Ontario here, the Dead Wings have in excess of 1 million people to draw from. Why do the people of the SW not support the Wings. Nobody, I mean nobody drives around this city (as far as I have seen) with a Detroit Red Wings license plate cover or the flags that fly on the back windows. Lots of Leafs, no wings. Therefore, we over here, in the SW, do we really care? do we really support? if not why? Answer. Ur city is a dump, its too scary to go to, and if you leave anything for 2 minutes, its stolen. The truth, like it or not, Detroit is a dump. U live in a dump, be happy.

Proud Canadian from Canada writes: Stanton, do the Wings have to have a drug test before going out on the ice. Supposedly, That drug does something to make you feel good for 4 hrs at a time. Does it apply to playing a great game of hockey also? What about the supports? Do they have to be sized to fit? ????? Does one's brain function properly in a hockey game on that stuff????? Let Mr. Howe know.
OH. Mr. Howe. Mr. Stanton is not a Sens fan. He is a Canadian fan. Not Montreal, just a Canadian.- Posted 12/05/08 at 3:20 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment
