Jays' Wells leave games with injury

Globe and Mail Update

CLEVELAND — The snake-bitten Toronto Blue Jays took another hit here Friday night when star centrefielder Vernon Wells had to leave the game in the sixth inning with a jammed left wrist and right hamstring tightness.

Wells hurt himself coming in hard and making a great diving catch off a shallow fly ball struck by Cleveland's Franklin Gutierrez. The Jays were leading 1-0 at the time with a Cleveland runner at first.

Wells appeared to land awkwardly on his left wrist making the catch and Jays' trainer George Poulis was quickly on the scene checking out his condition.

Wells, who had off-season surgery on his left shoulder, then slowly made his way to the Blue Jays dugout.

Alex Rios moved from right field over to centre in place of Wells with newcomer Brad Wilkerson shifting from left field to right.

Shannon Stewart came into the game to play left field.
