Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: Ouch. Not even close. This could have been 6-1 or 8-1 if not for Turco. Morrow did what he does best, but the rest of the Stars looked stunned. The Wings controlled every aspect of this game. The teams Dallas beat to get to the final (Ducks, Sharks) were definitely not on the same level as this Detroit squad.

Nicolas Perrot from Ottawa, Canada writes: The red wings showed what they were capable of. Quick team that won't back down in the corners, crowds Turco, and passes extremely well. Dallas' grit might have been enough against the ducks and the sharks, but now they face a determined opponent. If the following games are the same this will be a boring series. Hopefully Pens - Flyers will be more exciting.

Howard Young from Canada writes: I have faith that Dallas will re-tool and make a series of it. Detroit plays a very different game in comparison to the Ducks and the Sharks. Either way, nobody can dispute that the Wings look good. It's too bad about all the empty seats at the Joe. If I lived closer, I would take in a game just for the experience.

steve allan from Canada writes: Dallas was slow off the mark, which is perfectly understandable given the lengthy overtime win Tuesday, but they definitely took control after the midpoint of the game. Now how much of that was due to Dallas coming around and how much was due to the Red Wings sitting on the lead is anybody's guess, but I suspect we'll see a much closer game next time out.
Detroit is really a desperate place these days. For a place that fancies itself 'Hockeytown' they can't even sell out a Conference Final game. That's pathetic. The economy is in the dumps but if you can't muster up more support than that you don't deserve to win. I hope the Pens or Flyers win the Cup.- Posted 08/05/08 at 11:30 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: Puck control... that's what the Wings are all about. I've watched all their playoff games so far and unless Turco steals on I don't know if Dallas will even win one.
If they do it will be in Dallas.... game 4 is my guess.

Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: Some comments lead one to wonder if some posters actually watch the games. Brendan Morrow and Dave Tippett were unequivocal in saying that Dallas was totally uncompetitive tonight. Babcock's post game comments were very significant: the Wings do not want to let the Stars come back up off the floor, so they do whatever it takes to eliminate them. Detroit controlled the tempo for almost the entire game; plus, Dallas took penalties that killed any chance they might have had. The statistics (Detroit won 63% of the faceoffs, Wings 3 for 7 on the PP, Dallas outshot in the first two periods, Stars limited to six shots in the final frame, just to cite a few examples) only serve to underscore just how dominant Detroit was. Tippett, at least, has no illusions how about tough it will be for his team to beat the Wings. Finally, what the fans have to do with how deserving a team as talented and disciplined as the Wings are, is tenuous at best.

Pat Billings from CDN, Canada writes: I hope the young Habs were watching this display of playoff hockey.
You score on the PP, then you force the other team to play your game and you dictate the pace of the game.
Simple and highly successful. It's no wonder Detroit was the best regular season game.- Posted 08/05/08 at 11:54 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Bill Weston from Grand Rapids, MI, United States writes: The Wings have "some skill and they made some good plays"?? Sounds like Turco didnt see ANY of this game! How about one more round of "the Wings are not in my head, the Wings dont own me"? The Stars have now lost 3 of their last 4 games.
Steve allan, it doesnt sound like you saw much more of this game then Turco did. Detroit dominated every aspect from start to finish. As for the empty seats, that has everything to do with the economy here in Michigan and nothing to do with the Wings deserving to win or not. The Joe is not a cheap place to go watch a game. I may not be able to afford to go see them play right now but Ive been a fan for almost 50 years and I can honestly say, having watched every single game this season, not just the playoffs, that this is one of the best Wings teams I can remember. When they win, they deserve it.
The scary thing is that, while Dallas can say they werent 100%, and maybe they werent, neither were the Wings but they still controlled this game and made it look easy!- Posted 09/05/08 at 2:52 AM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Greeting Wolverine from the Wet Coast of Vanc Isle.
Bill I won $10 bucks tonight but going to take Big D in the 2nd game.
Still scratching my a$$ about that 3rd Red Wings goal Bill--
Where I learned hockey that used to be called Interference.
Overall, that was a VERY classy show by the Wings tonight.
There were some pretty hard 'Ouches' later in that game.
Zeus has ordained the Red Wings in this series.
But Methinks it's going to get very ROUGH B4 this is all over.
TSN showed a close-up of 2 Stars yapping at Centre Ice.
Bill I'm not a Doctor but those 2 guys talking looked zoombies
Like the faces on Echo 3 Platoon after 6 weeks in the foxholes.
Very bushed (not the Prez) but utterly pooped & exhausted.
So I'm switching my $10 bucks to Dallas for the next game.
After a few Starry nights of sleep (provided they sleep alone)
And if lowly Nashville can beat the Wings twice.
Then superior Dallas should be able to win a few games too Bill.- Posted 09/05/08 at 3:56 AM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Bill Weston from Grand Rapids, MI, United States writes: Hi Hap.. congratulations on the $10. Too bad you want to turn around and loose it tomorrow night :( Try this tidbit on for size: Press clipping Jim Reeves, Ft. Worth Star-Telegram: "The Stars didn't just lose to the Wings, they capitulated. They allowed the Wings to do what they always do to the Stars here: play the role of schoolyard bully. ... The Stars validated every fear their fans had coming into this series. "Turco just can't beat the Wings: True. "Mike Modano never plays well in his home state of Michigan: True. "The Stars turn to Jell-O at the sight of Detroit's red jerseys: True." As for the Holmstrom goal, yeah maybe. But I know the refs watch Homer like a hawk and they didnt call it. Besides, check this quote from the guy who write about the Stars for the Dallas Morning News, Jean-Jacques Taylor: "Please, spare me all of the whiny e-mails about the officiating. Yes, the officials should've waved off Tomas Holmstrom's goal, which made it 3-0, since he was clearly in the crease. "But let's be real, would it have really mattered? Nope. The Stars still would've been smoked. "Besides, good teams overcome bad calls. Detroit finished with three power-plays goals. Guess what? They earned each of them." 67% of the respondants in the DMN poll about why the Stars lost last night attributed it to the fact that the Wings are just a better team. At least that was the % when I checked it an hour ago.

Sean O'Reilly from Canada writes: Great start to the series for the wings. They did not allow Dallas to get the first game like in previous series. The offficiating was poor on both sides, but the wings came out ahead on a few. But that would not have changed the result. The third period was a 'get this over with'
I was concerned about the wings time off, but they skated well and looked like they were playing the other day.
I have a hard time buying the theory that the 4 overtime game from Sunday was the reason the Stars looked so bad, the had over three days to rest.
I will say something wasn't right about them, they grind out games and this one was a lot more open than the one's I have watched them play.
I too, am disappointed with the crowds at the Joe, I know the economy is bad, but the Piston's and the Tigers are drawing, and their records don't measure up against the wings. They also draw from Windsor too, so you would thing they would sell out. Oh well, time to make the trip down and cheer em' on. I'll just have to figure out how to clap with one arm since I will have used the other on gas!
Happy with the result!
Bring on game 2.
Go wings!- Posted 09/05/08 at 7:30 AM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Hap Stokes from Canada writes: Gosh Bill when I lived in Mesquite they didn't have that many smart sports reporters in Dallas/Ft Worth. It was all THE CooowBoys.
Ohh there was one reporter, she did the 6PM Evening News in Dallas. But she grew up in a Poor Boy Trailer on the next farm to ours. Yet somehow, she could talk Texican better than a Texan can.
The TV station didn't renew her after she turned 40. Guess you have to be a 'fresh face' to be a TV Reporter. Now she writes for a paper and makes Republican Texican Speeches to rich high tone womens groups. But she still sings Willie Nelson stuff (on the sly).
She is hockey AVID too & plays a mean guitar (usually mine) and breaks me up with her phony accent, which she doesn't use when she's home (unless).
Well maybe you and those Dallas sports writers are correct Bill. Would agree with Y'awl 'ceptin dun wanna throw my whammy on the Wings by picken'em. My pick'ems this year ain't very good. So far Bill am batting 0.00 so to keep my average perfect will pick the Stars. There now Detroit will sure as all hell win. There Bill I just put the whammy on Big D.- Posted 09/05/08 at 7:35 AM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Maybe the Canadian teams should be looking at the Canadian Space Agency for coaches and GMs?

Gordon Howe from HockeyTown, United States writes: Just as I suspected there would be somebody show up with the "Dallas played a long series" rant. That's why the Wings won. Give your head a shake. The difference between the Wings and Dallas's other opponents? The Wings can fly. The Wings have puck posession. Lots of people were saying that Big D was gonna pound the Wings. They must have missed Kronwall then, and his luv tap at center ice. Dallas had plenty of time off. If they were any good at all they would have finished off the Sharks when they had the chance. They didn't and here we are. Now that the Habs fans are done along with the Sens fans I guess they need some place to post their frustration. As for the empty seats, there weren't many if at all. The ones you saw were probably when the third was almost over, because where I was sitting the towels were flyin. The Wings just have to keep doing what their doing. If that bonehead Ott wants to yak it up so be it. He'll spend time in the box and you know what happens then. Unlike the Habs powerplay, this one works. One more thing. I hope Ott doesn't have his head down at center ice getting a pass across the middle cause I suspect he'l be laying down in pain after Kronwall hits him. Yak all you want about Morrows hits, there's only one guy that hits straight up, and he wears #55.

Goaltender interference on another goal.
Not that it really mattered.
As for Dallas being tired... well I thought Detroit looked out of sync compared to the other games I have watched.(all of them).
Both teams will get better... but Detroit is by far the superior team. They haven't had a bad game since they sat Hasek on the end of the bench.

Howard Young from Canada writes: I watched the whole game on TV in HD so I was able to see the empty seats. From the very beginning there were more then a few seats empty along the 10 first rows from the glass. Not a significant amount of empty seats, but I would say from end to end from where the camera was recording, I would say I counted about 20 empty seats, all primo seats to boot.
Either way, nice to see them do well. I have a lot of Wings in my pool (a LW, Centre and 3 D-men), I regret not taking Osgoode.- Posted 09/05/08 at 11:27 AM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Lidstrom just has amazing anticipation and can intercept plays before the opposing team even knows what they're going for. Terrible officiating...that first goal was a real kick in the pants for Dallas. McCreary...
Howard, I thought it was surprisingly quiet for a playoff game as well. I guess they've had attendance issues all season because of the state of the city's economy, but you would expect different in the conference finals.
Anyways, hoping Dallas can pull one back and make a series of this. I don't think they'll go without putting up a fight.- Posted 09/05/08 at 12:01 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Allan Hewitson from Canada writes: I sure hope the empty seats were just the expensive ones at the front...if it was as empty back in the cheap seats I don't give much for the fure of Hockeytown USA.
A good hockey team -- fans, however have to choose where to spend their discrfetionary sports $$$ and baseball, basketball is winning.
That being said Dallas were so "not in this game."
But, as I've said all year, it's open season on goalies -- the refs will NOT call legitimate goal crease infractions. Am I wrong, but why does it always seem to be the visiting goalie getting run over or bum-bumped?
Thank goodness for the World Cup, even if it is (so far) truly crappy hockey despite TSN's trained seals raving about the "skills" on display. Then back to the garden, for I've had more than enough of this over-hyped crap in pursuit of more goals. I won't watch it is June if the sun is shining.
By the way, keep up the minute by minute onslaught of the Leafs hunt for respectability -- this is funnier than "Just for Laughs" but would play better on the Autopsy Channel.

Picked the Stars and Pens for the final at trade deadline and put a 5-1 bet down with my buddy. Looking forward to the Eastern final. The second last game of the season between those two teams was fantastic, although one can't say the same for the last but I think Bryan Murray can explain why.

So Howard you counted 20 empty seats in a 20 thousand seat stadium? Wow that's a lot. Are you sure they weren't out eating or taking a dump?? The joint was a sellout. All I know is where I was we were having a great time and I saw a lot of red. These are different Wings this year. They're more hungry and they know they may have to get down and dirty. They are to me anyway the best forechecking team in the NHL and for sure in the playoffs, plus they have a whole wack of talented players.

Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: Detroit's strength is not only in their skill and toughness, but in the intelligence of their key players. When you watch the video breakdowns of Game 1, and see how the Wings, for example, cut off Turco's clearing passes and turn them into scoring opportunties; and how disciplined their point men like Lidstrom and Rafalski are in gettng shots to the net (and scoring), you know why Dave Tippett looks worried. The Stars have moxie, but Detroit has a level of professionalism that requires more than Dallas may have in their arsenal.
