Trilly B from Canada writes: Anyone who knows anything about surveys will understand that this one is flawed (with respect to how it's being presented). As already suggested here, this type of survey is largely based on current team performance.
Of course fans polled during the second round of the playoffs will identify with the only Canadian team left! Duh!
This is like that survey that appeared on ESPN's website a while back, attempting to measure brand value of north american sports teams by surveying fans. Predictably, current league champions and runners-up ranked high. Last year, for example, the Ottawa Senators ranked very high, and Montreal very low. Now that doesn't make much sense, does it?

Not that I really care.... living in the GTA I will always get to watch my Leafs play... but what a stupid poll with the Habs being the only Canadian team left in the playoffs.
Take the poll again after the over half Canadian Flyers knock off the 7 Canadians on the Habs (Ryder isn't dressing) and my bet is Canada's favourite team will be the Pens.

Jude Hannaford from Canada writes: Scot, you've certainly been drinking the CBC's koolaid. Don't get me wrong, it seems I've had a glass or two as well. Someone had posted this already a couple of days ago, but this "Canada's team" nonsense is all about the CBC suckering us in to watching even though our team is out. But I'd like to elaborate a little further. Round 1; 3 to 4 Canadian teams, we still cheer for the home team. Round 2; 2 Canadian teams remain (if were lucky) some of us cheer on the home side while the CBC invites our country men and women to join our side to defeat the American based team. Round 3; 1 team left, CBC heralds remaining team as Canada's team, only team left to beat the dreaded Southern US team. Round 4; No Canadian teams left, default to team with the most Canadians, with the tie going to the team closest to the border. All of this going on, while our heroes from the home side have the good sense to spend the spring on the golf course, while the suckers (yours truly included) are still in front of the TV cheering on "Canada's team" whomever that may be. And yes, if my beloved Canadiens are indeed eliminated from the playoffs I too will cheering on Sidney, Gary, Marc-Andre, and Georges, to bring the cup to a place where snow has indeed fallen at least once this year. Vive Les Canadiens

reality man from ottawa, Canada writes: So how can you compare the support for a team in the playoffs with one that is not? Generally, Canadians tend to rally around the remaining Canadian team in the playoffs. I cheered for Montreal in '93 (in the finals) ,Vancouver in '94, Calgary in '04 and Edmonton in '06 even though none of these teams is my favourite and I am a Leaf fan. Last year's poll, when both Toronto and Montreal were out of the playoffs, showed Montreal and Toronto at roughly the same level of support with the difference probably being well within the poll's margin of error. I would suspect that the level of support for both Montreal and Toronto is roughly the same across the country given the same circumstances. By the way, this poll points out that it was taken AFTER both Ottawa and Calgary were eliminated so by defintion Montreal is "Canada's team" in the playoffs since no other Canadian team is in contention. The level of support for Montreal is very high (at 40%) because as anybody must admit, whether they love or hate the Habs, Montreal has a very high level of support across the country. On the other hand, were Toronto in the same position as Montreal right now then the level of support for the Leafs would probably be roughly the same give or take a few percent.

The Expos and Alouettes knew their seasons were "fillers" til hockey season started again in the fall. And Chris G, if you truly feel it is unfortunate that you are a Leafs fan - uh, did you know you don't have to be? Go ahead, wake up and smell that coffee.
As for the last Canadian team, yeah, hard to define. Sens, Anaheim and St. Louis Blues had the most Canadians on their team this year. Montreal one of the least. That fact must really irk Don Cherry. And isn't Montreal's owner an American?
I want to cheer for Montreal but I honestly don't think they have what it takes. They had a good ending to their season but then Montreal fans got really cocky and started planning their parade route. I like Pittsburgh but get tired of hearing about Sid the Kid all the time. I really wanted to cheer for Washington because I think Ovechkin is a hoot - looks like he absolutely LOVES to play hockey, but how can I cheer for an American team?
I guess I wish there were more Canadian-based teams so we would have more chances of remaining in the playoffs. Right now we're a measley 6 against 24. Not the greatest odds.
