I think that team Canada will still be a better suad for this tourny. but I fear the kind of roster that the Russians will be able to ice at the 2010 olympics.
Ovechkin Markov
Kovalchuk Gonchar
Semin Zubov
Radulov
Malkin
Kosistyns (both) (spelling?) Nabokov

Canada would be much better off with one team... The Soviet Union would likely dominate this tournament if they were still together.
I will be interested in seeing Ovechkin at the World Championship in Halifax this coming week.
It's a shame in a way that Crosby is still competing in the NHL playoffs...
Cheers.- Posted 28/04/08 at 1:02 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

J.C. Petite from Toronto, Canada writes: Ya sorry, I thought the Kostitsyns were from Russia but I guess not. Nevertheless, I still think that their team is dynamite. Its so good to see such a competitive class at the Olympics. I cant wait for 2010, I love cheering on Canada (as a Leaf fan, its pretty much all the excitement I get). I wonder if Price will be our tender by then, or if Tavares and Stamkos will be part of the team. Possible lineup for Canada at the 2010 Olympics
Forwards: Crosby, Iginla, LeCav., Thornton, Sakic, Nash, St. Louis, Tavares, Stamkos, Savard, Heatley Defense: Phaneuf, Stall, Pronger, Boumeester, Doughty,
Goaltender: No idea since Brodeur has not exactly been himself lately.
Im sure I left out some good guys.- Posted 28/04/08 at 1:15 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Mr Right from Toronto, Canada writes: J.C. - the thing that Team Canada has to avoid is taking soft, passive players, regardless of talent. I don't want to go back to the days of picking pluggers for specific roles (Rob Zamuner anyone?), but the softies have to stay home.
That means NO Heatley, Thornton, Bertuzzi or Spezza. Nash should be OK (I think), and maybe by the time 2010 comes around, guys like Toews, Horton (?), E. Staal etc. will be ready to dominate.- Posted 28/04/08 at 1:24 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

How do you choose? We should enter Canada 1 and Canada 2
The one team is all talent.
The two team is all size and speed.

In both of these cases the Canadian team was strong, and we had every reason to hope for gold.

Mr Right from Toronto, Canada writes: Arec, I'd have to look at NHL team rosters first to solidify a team but I'd definitely take these guys off:
Thornton - Uninspired
Regehr - Too slow
Staal #2 - Whether it's J or M
Pronger - Penalty issues, slippage
Heatley - The king of softness
Redden - Deer in the headlights
Spezza - Not quite a king, but a prince of softness
And here are at least 2 the borderline guys:
Phaneuf - overrated and can be exposed, especially on big ice. These playoffs he had 3 goals, 4 assists in 7 games, but was a minus 2. In fact, so did Green. But it was Green's 1st playoff so I'll cut him a bit of slack. Plus, he dominated the play a lot.
Luongo - who knows in 2 years? Right now I like Turco (and others?)better.
Love the inclusion of Bergeron. Has anyone seen Keith play on Chicago? I haven't, but he trailed only Lidstrom in plus/minus for defensemen. On Chicago. How is that possible?!?- Posted 28/04/08 at 5:12 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Dan Paslawski from GoHabsAndFlames, Canada writes: I am not a big fan of Heatley, but he has delivered the goods at the world championships more than once. He may be a softie in the NHL playoffs, but the Canadians have had good success when they send talent.
Phaneuf played a strong series for the Flames with the exception of Game Seven (-2). I agree that Regehr is too slow for the bigger ice. We'd be better of with him - he bowed out due to a hip injury. Turco's Stars won't be eliminated any time soon, so you can't count him in. Besides this is the first time he has been able to step up during the playoff run.
I am not a fan of the Canucks either, but Luongo was the reason why they were even close to a playoff spot.- Posted 28/04/08 at 5:34 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Reality check. Since 1952 Canada has won 1(one) Olympic gold medal in men's hockey.
PS- If Luongo is the goalie in 2010 I don't see much chance for Canada.- Posted 28/04/08 at 6:46 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment
