Jackie Chan could fight in Beijing

Globe and Mail Update

Russian fight promoters are waiting on approval from the Chinese Olympic Committee to stage an exhibition bout between Chinese actor-producer and martial arts icon Jackie Chan and Australian-based Russian boxer Kostya Tszyu.

Chan, 54, reportedly agreed to a match with the 38-year-old junior welterweight world champion as part of the hoopla surrounding the Olympic boxing tournament. However, Chan is one of the official ambassadors of the Beijing Games, and Olympic authorities could object to the match as a sideshow publicity stunt.

"Jackie Chan gave his approval, saying he liked the idea," event organizer Tatyana Trubnikova told the Internet site fightnews.com. "But we need to receive permission from the Chinese Olympic Committee, because Chan is China's official face for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing."

If the fight take place, the tentative date is August 22 or 23, at the Russian delegation's Games-time residence of Russia House.
