THE LAKEMAN from N.S., Canada writes: After we experienced the three game sweep at the hands of the A's I too was pretty low in spirits but I took a real hard look at our team and after considering all things I believe the Jays are fundamentally sound with a few areas that need attention. We could use a leftie in the starting rotation and that may require trading BJ for a good leftie. I was hard on The Big Hurt a few days ago and then he came alive so the jury is still out on this one I believe. We could use more offence in the catching position but other than that and a few patches in the bull pen we are sound. B.J. will soon be back and hopefully better than ever. Jansen was a much bigger loss than I was originally prepared to admit. What we need more than anything is a good dose of playing small ball. As soon as a player gets on, start moving him around the bases, this will require more steals and more bunting, etc. This is basically where the manger and coaches come in if the job is not being done that is where the cure is needed. We are also getting a new leftie in the bull pen by the name of Carlston I believe; lets keep our fingers crossed. If League is ever going to help now is the time for him to pull up his socks.
  2. mike mck from miramichi, Canada writes: I agree 100 percent with lakeman. Toronto under Gibbons does not know how to play small ball. New shortstop is excellent at it. But all players should be able to play this game. Jeter has no problem bunting if asked and that is why NY wins, The team comes ahead of the egos. Jays lost at least ten games last year that could easily have won. Now we see it happening again with three losses to Oakland. Two games in Row outfield not positioned right. Toronto has a coaching problem more then anything else. Gibbons should be toast after last year. As for big hurt, he is asset to team.Has to be most disciplined batter in Baseball. Wells et al could learn watching him at plate. Hope Toronto can pull it out even with Gibbons hindering their play.

  4. Kipling Hedley from Victoria, Canada writes: No beer on two dollar Tuesdays in the cheap seats, a few bad apples ruined it.
Jesse Carlson: A Star is Born. Jesse Litsch: The Stopper. Joe Inglett gets the call and hopefully Adam Lind will be next. Things are looking up.

I'm right here. And I stand by my words. So long as JP and JG are running this team, they will win 80-84 games a year when they should be winning 90-94. Moneyball only works when you have hitters who are capable of getting key hits in tough situations. The Jays don't have those hitters. They do have some speed, baserunning, bunting ability and defence, but management has absolutely no clue how to use these weapons (or refuses to use them). Until the turdballs who are in charge, and have been using the same failed strategies for years, are gone, the team will underachieve and continue losing key games to pigeon teams like Oakland, Tampa, KC et al. As they have done every year since 1994.
  7. SY GIL from TO, Canada writes: What is it that Jason Frasor doesn't get? Here's yet another opportunity for him to grab the closer role. He chokes again. If his role is long relief, ie., to mop up, then that's fine but those are dime a dozen.

Against a team with terrible pitching, it was another nervous ninth. With Halliday not looking like he can't regain his Cy Young form, Burnett is what he is, and two sophmore , pitching is anything but scary.

Can't say I'm all that impressed with this team. They could be done again by early summer.
