QMJHL to address fighting on Friday

Canadian Press

MONTREAL — After a number of brawls during playoff games this week, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League brass will address the issue of violence on the ice.

League president Gilles Courteau will discuss the issue with Quebec Education Minister Michelle Courchesne during a news conference on Friday in Montreal.

A debate has raged in the province since the brawl last Saturday in Chicoutimi.

The Quebec government said this week that something needs to be done about violence in junior hockey following the violent scrap between the Quebec Remparts and the Chicoutimi Sagueneens.

The son of Hall of Fame goaltender Patrick Roy, Jonathan, received a seven game suspension from the league.

Patrick Roy, the Remparts' coach, general manager and part owner, received a five game suspension in addition to fines.

Sagueneens players and their coach, Richard Martel were also suspended and fined over a melee that erupted during a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoff game Saturday in Chicoutimi.

A number of other incidents have occurred during the first round of the Quebec league playoffs that have resulted in a number of suspensions and fines being levied.

A police investigation has been opened to determine if criminal charges will be laid for the Chicoutimi fracas that has been replayed countless times across the country.

Jonathan Roy bolted across the ice to pound on Bobby Nadeau, the Chicoutimi goaltender, who offered no resistance.

Jonathan Roy then gave fans at the Centre Georges-Vezina a one-fingered salute before scrapping with another Chicoutimi player.

Both Roy's apologized for a lack of judgment.
