Be careful whom you boycott

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has mused aloud that a boycott of the Olympic opening ceremonies in Beijing might be worth considering. Now, Belgium has taken up the theme. History may never repeat itself, but to those who recall the last Olympic boycotts, in 1980 and 1984, the musings are ominous.
On Boxing Day, 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan.
