NEW YORK Sports Illustrated is picking the Detroit Tigers to win the World Series.
The weekly magazine says the Tigers boast what a rival American League general manager calls one of the most dominant offenses that any team has fielded in 10 years.
Detroit features defending AL batting champion Magglio Ordonez, who along with Placido Polanco, Gary Sheffield and Curtis Granderson batted a combined .320 in 2007. The Tigers traded in the offseason for third baseman Miguel Cabrera, who averaged 115 runs batted in over the past four years with the Florida Marlins.
Sports Illustrated writer Ben Reiter expresses some misgivings about Detroit's pitching. But he says the offense, coupled with a rejuvenated rotation, should add up to the Tigers' first world championship since 1984.
