warren standerwick from North Vancouver, Canada writes: Last week, Canada qualified two men, two women, three pairs and two dance teams for the world championships next year in Los Angeles
Is this a mistake about the men? If not, why would Canada, with a 1st and a 9th, qualify only two?- Posted 24/03/08 at 12:48 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

May Loo from Calgary, Canada writes: I agree with the previous posting. I thought the guideline was that, if you medalled, as long as your result and the next highest finish from your country totalled 13 points or less, you got the third placing. That's why France will only qualify two men for next year's world championships, whereas the US and Canada would qualify three.

S. P. from Cape Breton, Canada writes: The previous two posters are correct; the article is wrong re the nummber of men qualifying. Also, I read on the World Championships website that if you have someone place in the top two, you can send three teams next year, regardless of the placing of the other team(s). On this basis, Canada would qualify three dance teams next year. Does anyone know if this is correct?

A Wong from Montreal, Canada writes: I thought the old rule (i'm basing this on what happened in Calgary in 1988, so I could be way off now) was that if you medaled at all, you could send 3 teams, but then some time in the 90s they changed that to any two teams from the same country whose combined placing adds to 13. That's why we were able to send 3 pairs teams this year despite not medalling last year. Regardless of whether we only send two dance teams next year or not, with Dubreuil and Lauzon returning to competitive skating next year, we're sure to have 3 spots in ice dancing for the year after thought--possibly with two medalists from that event. Now if we could only do something about the women's event...

S. P. from Cape Breton, Canada writes: I really have my doubts that Dubreuil and Lauzon will return to competitive skating. It's very difficult to return after that much time out of the competitive arena, plus they would have a very difficult time winning the Canadian championships (although I agree it would be great to be able to send both them and Virtue/Moir to world's next year).
