You think?!
These next two weeks are going to be brutally long. Hopefully Stajan isn't talking a bunch of BS, because with the looks of it, Sundin may be back this week.- Posted 23/03/08 at 10:36 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Byron Yankou from Toronto, Canada writes: Saturday nights Leaf game was one of the best I've seen them play in several years. Five goals, great goaltending, skating their guts out to reach the puck first in battles along the board. Great open ice checks, some fists flying. Extremely entertaining, but aggravating procrastination. Why did they wait until they were out of it.

Hap Stokes from Canada writes: My Easter Prayer.
Dear CBC please, please, in the name of God, the Oilers are making a run, an exciting run for the play-offs. I know they are a BIG 3 points back and really don't have much hope of catching Colorado--BUT
Those Oilers have a far, far, more & better chance than Toronto.
Split the National God, give unto Toronto the comedy of the Leafs.
And God grant unto the rest of us some hockey for a change
PS--I Pray for the Canucks and also the Bruin's (used 2Bfarm hand).
Any team so long as it isn't NYI, Tampa Bay or (you know who else)
And God do not harken unto David Shoalts anymore.

So the question becomes,'Who are the REAL Toronto Maple Leafs, and why the Dr. Jekyl-Mr. Hide schizophrenic performance of the beginning of the season and now? The Million dollar question! Did Maurice lose the team in Novenber, but got it back in February? Subtle changes in the system?
Look, I really respect and love watching Sundin play, he has it all, but perhaps his time is up in Toronto. Let's look at the realities:1) The Leafs have not made the playoffs in the last three years. 2) I'll make a blasphemous statement; the Leafs look and are better without Sundin.
It kind of reminds me of the older cousin who has outlived his usefullness having shacked up at your house. Nice guy, good worker, good experiences, very protective, but has taken up too much room and has become stale- not allowing the younger ones to spread their own wings and achieve on their own.
Anyhow, these games aren't really pressure games as the leafs are supposed to lose. They are playing lose.
A REAL pressure game will be when they actually are playing a game for the 8th playoff spot. It might happen in game 82 if all the stars line up. Then we will see how the react to pressure!

Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: Good Morning Rob... you are getting up and I am getting home. Oops.
Your first question concerning Maurice... well the difference that I see is Raycroft is no longer part of the experiment... Neither are Wozniewski and Gill.
Maurice still has Blake on the ice in critical situations.. (I know he is playing with Stajan and Tucker... but still no excuse).
Who made the decisions to give those players the minutes they got? Who made the decision that Blake should get Tuckers minutes?
I blame Maurice... with some nudges that he could have refused from JFJ.
Sundin? I refer you to Natalies quote in the first post.
I however beg to differ on Natalies opinion on the quote.
I think it's about time a Leaf stated publicly that maybe the rest of them are 'waiting' for Mats to do it.
Give me two wins over Boston and lets see who shows up against the Habs on Saturday.... I have cancelled all previous engagements.

Baldy Cotton from Canada writes: After watching this Leaf act for most of the last 41 years, I'm just so fed up with the perennial scramble to play well after it's too late. So many times over the years . . . and carbon-copy finishes the last three seasons consecutively! Um, fellas, where were you when the the Caps were shuffling their way to a 7-1 win? [etc., etc.] Put it to rest, lads--get the draft pick and toss the hand grenade in the board room. If Stamkos slips away, then take some other blue-chipper who's not named Luca Cereda. Bring back the Maple Leafs of yore . . . introduce Peddie to the wood chipper out back, and enough with the dime store Herb Brooksian stabs at a miracle playoff spot by the Toronto Tanenbaums.

Morning Scot.....I won't even ask.......! :-)
Just looking at some stats that you mentioned;
Raycroft: From the start of the year until January 20th (and HE hasn't played since) his record was 2 Wins and 12 Loses!
Toskala: From the start of the season until January 20th his record was
16 wins-16 loses:
Since January 20th Toskala 's record was 16 wins- 11 loses
Toskal totals for the year:....32 wins-27 loses
Raycroft totals for the year: 2 wins-12 loses
Maybe Maurice waited too long to go with Toskala, but was that his decision alone, or was JFJ pulling the strings to prove he made a right decision trading for Raycroft? I believe the latter. Having two 'supposed' number ones is a recipe for disaster.
That, once again, just proved how JFJ and his staff DID NOT have the ability to evaluate talent or understand dressing room chemistry......thank god he is gone! Since JFJ firing-the team is 16-11!

I'm tired. :) Your goalie stats don't make my point.... :( .. thanks :) I thought Toskala should have been number 1 from the beginning ... with maybe every fourth game to Raycroft.... didn't do my way. My point was more about the others anyway... especially Wozniewski and Blake. Jay Harrison has still not seen a minute of NHL time this year. Not happy with that... not quite sure what I am missing on that one. Kronwall thru the best check of any leaf all year last night.... then stood up for himself after delivering a good clean check... Haven't seen much of that this year either. Soft team.. way too soft. The big questions that are coming up are.... 'who leaves this summer?' Team needs a shake up... so who stays and who goes? (Hearing some old Clash in my ears). Is Kubina better than McCabe? We only need one of that type of defenseman. Are White and Stralman the puck movers making Kaberle expendable? Hint... Kaberle is the softest. Are Steen, Stajan and Poni worth top 6 forward prices? Blake and Tucker are not... yet we are only supposed to be paying 6 of them. Do we bring back Sundin? Cheers

They should limit the free agants to affordable gritty guys like Michael Ryder (27 years old) and .....yea, Sean Avery (he's only 27 too) and leave the Markus Naslunds and Marian Hossas to others. Great players but would not put the Leafs over the top and would cost way too much money. And the Leafs don't need defencemen.........
Or they can look at it another way. Check out the very top teams in the league whose youngsters are UFA's and see if they can fit in on the cheap. Just because a youngster doesn't make these teams' first 3 lines, doesn' mean they are bad players.
I would look real close at Detroit-San Jose-Anaheim-Dallas-New Jersey-Pittsburgh organizations...those kids would have been around proven winners...
At the end of the day though, they can't scew up the draft this year-deep!

Would somebody finally drive the stake through the heart of this team, please? The only way CBC will broadcast other teams is for this miserable team to crash and burn. The sooner the better. I agree with many that I am sick of the Laughs dominating the air time on a supposed National network that is publicly owned by the tax payers. I don't care about the statistics of the viewing audience. The rest of the country needs equal opportunity at viewing time. But the CBC is not doing anything to remedy that, and neither are their employees from McLean, Cherry, and even the Hotstove segment. All of them are Toronto home boys! I am sick and tired of it. Although I don't care about either of the Alberta teams, the very fact that they are so different in their broadcasts on the CBC makes me watch them. ANYTHING OTHER THAN TORONTO! Please, CBC and Globe and Mail, if you are NATIONAL media outlets, start acting like it!

With the two different time zones, you'll likely get your wish of seeing the Oilers play, especially since the Flames were on the late game out in Alberta this past weekend. BTW, both the Leafs and the Oilers are in the same predicament in terms of points behind, teams to overtake and inter-division matchups. Both teams have to play perfect down the stretch, but the good news for you is that Colorado is tanking so maybe your assessment of the Oilers having a better chance isn't so far off, but trust me, you added a two too many 'fars' in your post.
Scot, IMHO, Harrison is even a lesser NHL ready D man than Woz and that's saying a lot. Granted, Harrison plays tougher, but bringing up Kronwall was the best things to do.- Posted 24/03/08 at 11:15 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Did anyone tune into to AM640 and listen to the passion in his vocie. WOW! Bob Cole please get lost. Just a quick note on the game on Sat. Martin Gerber is not the answer to the goaltending problem. Doesn't my optimism make you want to laugh?
Well, I think they stand a chance.
They've outmatched the teams they'll play this season (as far as stats go.) We've won our last three games against Boston. Our last four games against Ottawa. In our six games with Montreal we've won three. And we won 2 of our three games with the Capitals. The last one March 1st.
But these ARE only numbers. If Toronto continue to play this way, winning the last 6 games in regulation time, then whose to say we won't make it?
Ottawa have got to beat the Sabs. Possible. March 25.
TB need to win against Florida. Tough luck. :( March 25.
Washington need to lose to Carolina. Carolina have won the last three games they've played. March 25.
Rangers could beat Philly. March 25.
And THAN we have to pull a double win against Boston. We'd have 84 points. March 25 and 27.
The standings would be:
Flyers 86
Boston 84
Leafs 84
Capitals 82
Sabres 81
Panthers 81
^ That would take a HUGEEEEEE miracle to happen. But all in retrospect, this could be a outcome. Nonetheless, March 25th seems to be the day to hold the fate of the Leafs in its hands.- Posted 24/03/08 at 12:16 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Applying the rules from Statistics regarding joint probabilities to your scenario above, the Leafs chances of being in the position that you describe on March 25th are about one tenth of one per cent.
Still, I believe in credit where it's due, and the Leafs are now playing excellent hockey. How laughable is it that there won't be any changes needed after they miss the playoffs again this year because they've "shown what they can do".

J.C. Petite from Toronto, Canada writes: Suuuurrreee Martel, keep telling yourself that. I think in the years to come we will see a re-build in the Leafs system and a rise back to a competitive franchise. However, the Sens will start a decline from the top, as their captain(much like the Leafs) is not getting any younger and the dream line will be split up. They will have to find themselves a #1 starter once and for all and will need to address their issues on the blueline. IMO the Ottawa Sens had their chance and they blew it, since then, they have allowed bits and pieces of the team to slip away and the chemistry is not what it used to be. Are they still a good team? Sure they are, but a powerhouse they are not. Much like the Leafs, it appears that they will have to build again to get to the top and if you think that Nick Foligno is the answer to the Sens future........I dont see too many studs in the Sens farm either.
