W M from Canada writes: Johnson hit .319 and led the team with 147 hits and is fully recovered from his injury, but they reason they are giving for cutting him is that offence it more important than defence. This is a serious question: What am I missing?

dan vanman from vancouver, Canada writes: Eric...stay on the hockey threads then ...Blue Jays, or their fans, don't need you punking them this early. And no one really cares what you think anyhow.
WM...Not sure where you got the 319. The article says Johnson hit 268, and Stewart 298 last year. So, there you go.
I like Reed though, they should have found a way to keep him...ah well, he'll get picked up by another team very soon...- Posted 24/03/08 at 1:20 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Allan Wexler from Canada writes: Last year JP said that the offense was ineffective because of injuries, but now he opts for an over the hill Shannon Stewart rather than the popular Reed Johnson. Does that mean the offence was never going to produce, and if so, what moves were made to remedy that other than Eckstein being brought in. The defense will be a problem this year. I love what Reed Johnson brought to the table including an attitude that many professional athletes lack. Only jerks like JP and Godfrey could ignore that, but, then again, they were never players, so couldn't possible understand the attitude of winners. Both of them must go.

B G from Toronto, Canada writes: actually, dan vanman, the article says Stewart hit .298 against righties, and Johnson .269.
The .319 was also quoted in the article as Johnson's average in 2006.
W M...the jays don't believe that Johnson can hit well as an everyday player (facing righties and lefties)...when he hit .319 they had Cattalanotto to come off the bench and face the tough left handers.
Personally, I think Johnson was just fine. But I'm not the GM.- Posted 24/03/08 at 9:02 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Your are missing the 1.5 million dollars the Jays saved by going with Stewart. Also next year Lind or Coates will likely occupy that position.- Posted 24/03/08 at 10:14 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Dave M from Canada writes: Man oh man the hits just keep on coming, but let us not lose faith just yet. A broken finger is not as bad as the injuries du jour like the infamous "high ankle sprain" or the nefarious "Tommy John Surgery" (curse that Tommy John and his shoulder destroying ways!!!)
I have to say that both Johnson and Stewart are fine players but I think when it comes down to it, offense should be more important in your left fielder than defense. Look at Manny Ramirez, that guy couldn't catch a cold and the Bosox have won 2 of the last three World Series!
Back when this team won the Series, they did so on solid offense and more than anything, great pitching. With good pitching everything else will sort it self out. Who cares who catches the fly balls to the outfield if none of our opponents can hit em' there. Go Jays Go!!!- Posted 24/03/08 at 10:39 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Not right or left from Canada writes: I'm sad to see Reed Johnson is being cut from the roster. He was my favorite Blue Jay and played the game the right way. Any team that signs him will get a hard nose competitor.
