Blair: Third To None

Globe and Mail Blog Post

Gregg Zaun and Jesse Litsch messed up on a chopper in front of the mound but with two on Jason Giambi grounded out and it's a 1-2-3 first for the Blue Jays, too.

I get the sense the players understand the only reason to play this game is to get the starting pitcher's work. Derek Jeter, who during the regular season stretches the boundaries of the time a player is allowed between pitches, is more than willing to let the quick-working Litsch have at it.

Manager John Gibbons has Reed Johnson hitting third but that's not another example of a lineup in a state of flux. One of the things the Blue Jays want to do this spring is to get Johnson as many at bats as possible in order to show scouts he's healthy so when the time comes to settle the last outfield spot there might be some interested trading partners.

In fact, when I asked Gibbons if the first thing he'll do this year with his lineup card is right in Wells' name in the No. 3 spot, he responded in the affirmative. Gibbons says he likes what he's seen from Wells so far this spring, saying now that his shoulder is healthy he's better able to follow through his swing.

Mike Wilner says he hopes the weather holds off so he can do his annual three innings on the webcast. Not certain I share that sentiment - no disrespect to Senor Wilner, just there's no reason to play any more than four innings in any Grapefruit League game - and based on the ways the skies look, I'll get my wish.

Spike Lee is sitting next to the Yankees dugout. He really is the man.
