Blair: Smells Like Opening Day

Globe and Mail Blog Post

As expected given the promixity of Dunedin to their Tampa spring training digs, the New York Yankees pretty much brought their 'A' team for Tuesday's Grapefroot League tilt at Knology. Thing is, the weather forecast suggests they'll be lucky to get in four innings (it's cloudy and windy,) with thunderstorms in the forecast. Hey, here comes da rain! Sweet - maybe I can get out of here and go watch some Champions League!

The lineups

Yankees
Johnny Damon, CF
Derek Jeter, SS
Bobby Abreu, DH
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Jason Giambi, 1B
Jorge Posada, C
Shelley Duncan, RF
Melky Cabrera, CF
Bernie Castro, 2B
P: Phil Hughes

Blue Jays
David Eckstein, SS
Scott Rolen, 3B
Reed Johnson, RF
Vernon Wells, CF
Frank Thonas, DH
Lyle Overbay, 1B
Aaron Hill, 2B
Shannon Stewart, LF
Gregg Zaun, C
P: Jesse Litsch

Manager John Gibbons would like to see Litsch work in his sinker a little more, in what is his third start of the spring. And we have a little - well, I wouldn't call it controversy exactly - disagreement about Jeremy Accardo's status. Gibbons says categorically that he'll be the setup guy if Ryan's healthy. General manager J.P. Ricciardi will only say that he's "in the mix." Cue the trade rumours: when you see the slop a team like the Yankees will be running out in middle relief, the market might cause the Blue Jays to do a little re-evaluating.
