Sandy T. from Canada writes:
So after the buy outs, next season we can look forward to a grand total of two "No-Trade" guys wearing Leaf jerseys... or just the one if Mats Sundin decides to retire.
I can live with that, but it sure is an expensive way to clean up Junior's mess.- Posted 26/02/08 at 10:25 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Will Smith from Vancouver, writes: Hence why Brian Burke hates the no-trade clause and avoids them like the plague. He refers to them as 'coach killers'. The only guy he's given a no-trade was JS Giguere because he wanted assurances that his family would be near medical care for his infant son (who has was born with fairly severe medical ailments).
Imagine, if your GM gave say 10 of your players no trades, oh gawd. (and you think the Federal Gov't has a big debt)
Sorry but someone just caved to keep a player. Kubina was never worth 5 million (or at least nothing from his previous stats indicates to me that he could sustain that career year). He hadn't had 17 goals since 04. Never exceeded 38 points and excluding the 17 goal season, hasn't hit double digits in goals since 02.
Whereas Phaneuf, who's never scored less than double digits in goals and less than 45 points IS worth the 6 and change million a year. (This year: 13 G, 45 PT, 8)
Only in TO I guess. If you didn't sign Kubina, there would have been blood but I guess when you pay your #1 defenseman nearly 6 million a year - your salary scale starts from there down.- Posted 27/02/08 at 1:46 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Patrick Matheson from Canada writes: I heard this rumour earlier today.... turned out false....
Did any of you?
What I read on the net was that Fletcher traded
'everyone'
but the 5 goofs for:
1. A large popcorn with buttery flavouring
2. A large coke
3. 20 tickets to a Blue Jays game.... (500 level)
If the 5 hold outs had been included then the offer was only for
small popcorn and a small coke...- Posted 27/02/08 at 2:26 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Jon Bakker from Mt. Pleasant, United States writes: If JFJ were still here, Shoalts would have given him the idea to bring back Belfour and Joseph to see what Maurice can do with them!

CD W from Canada writes: I am really tired of watching Fletcher look for the next nursing home, and Pat Quinn, well watching him trying to breath was labourious. As for Johnny boy, a lightweight for sure.

J R from Halifax, Canada writes: Not that I thought JFJ would have any suitors in the near future but does the affect of his 5 no trade clauses, as they played out yesterday for everyone to see, hurt his chances of being a GM again even more? I guess what I am saying is that he looked bad before but now that the hockey world can see how MLSE will have to drop millions to pay for his mistakes might A - guarantee he doesnt work as a GM for a very long time and B - make it harder for other players to get no trade clauses!

Sandy T. from Canada writes:
JR, I'm not certain he couldn't be forgiven the no-trade contracts and be considered for a job elsewhere, but when he spent an entire day on national television(TSN) steadfastly and adamantly refusing to even see, never mind admit, that he screwed up royally in most of his dealings during his time in Toronto might be the thing that keeps him out for a long time. Look at what's happened to Neil Smith, and he was a decent GM.
Everybody makes mistakes, but not everybody is delusional enough to think they haven't. Little Johnny's hockey future is not bright.- Posted 27/02/08 at 11:02 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

andy c from Canada writes: it was noted somewhere that back in the 80's the NBA had alot of no trade contracts it turned out to be a complete disaster. today the NBA still allows no trade clauses but only one player in the league has one and that would be Kobe. the only player on the leafs who should have gotten a no trade clause is sundin.

Gabriel Stefan from Toronto, Canada writes: Can't blame Fletcher, he was severely tied down to expensive players who refused to wave their no-trade clause. What the hell was JFJ thinking with this, what would happen if these players performance suffered (as it did), how do you try to bring your team out of the hole if you can't even make any adjustments.

Ross g from Edmonton, Canada writes: Fletcher could have played hardball... A week or two in the minors or the pressbox before the trade deadline would have had them lining up to go....
