The Economic Hitman jr. from Canada writes: That's a weak, lateral (at best) trade for the 'Nucks; it shows they are not serious about making a run this year.

David Gehring from Ottawa, Canada writes: At least they get something for Cooke, although I would rather take a draft pick than Pettinger. I don't know why there was so much hype over the Canucks making a run this year anyway, they are an average team at best and all of the injuries don't help. One losing streak and they'd finish ninth in the conference and miss the playoffs altogether.

bob saunders from Belleville Ontario, Canada writes: One winning streak and they end up in second or third in the conference or first in their division. I bet they wouldn't lose 5-0 to the Maple Lafts.

David Gehring from Ottawa, Canada writes: To finish second in the conference, they would have to pass Dallas, the very team that beat them out for Richards. That is one looooong winning streak that they'd have to make.

Jasper the Black Lab from Vancouver, Canada writes: Not sure I ever heard of Matt Pettinger, and would probably rather have a draft pick, but the Canucks just got a little bit better by shipping out Cooke.
Dallas is now a true Cup contender.- Posted 26/02/08 at 3:43 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Hap Stokes from Canada writes: The Canucks for years drafted even worse than the Leafs. But this summer they will have zillions left to sign up to 3 real super star players.
One thing I've learned about the Canucks though they are only an average team, but a highly OVER ACHEIVING one, so you can never count them out.--For two years (past) this has been a team of bums.
And softies--But look folks they just keep on winning even with all those injuries to a very good defense.--Maybe has lots to do with having the best Goalie in the NHL huh?- Posted 26/02/08 at 4:31 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Brad Richert from Canada writes: "The Canucks acquired forward Matt Pettinger from the Washington Capitals for left wing Matt Pettinger."
G&M, there is definitely something wrong with this sentence. No wonder the online version of the paper is free.- Posted 26/02/08 at 4:41 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

dan vanman from vancouver, Canada writes: Nice to hear the opinions of two Ontarians , about a team they know nothing about. Hap and David, your ignorance is embarressing yourselves.
David, coming from someone from Ottawa, I can understand the jealousy of seeing a team that works hard, seeing those slacker Sens have that as their number one problem.
And Hap. you are just wrong, plain and simple. Over achievers? Yeah right, they just got their record last year with smoke and mirrors. They are far above average, which you would know if you even watched a game from a team you pass judgement on.
Softies? The Canucks are among league leaders in fighting majors, and have probably the best team chemistry in the NHL. That is part of it.
The only smart thing you said Hap is about the money they will be able to spend next year.
Best goalie in the NHL? Yes, but Luongo is only one guy. This team is a TEAM, which I guess is something a Laffs fan would never understand...

Kevin Cummings from Hanover, NH, United States writes: Hey Dan - i'm a BC'er, a big Canucks fan, and listen to every game i can on the radio down here, and have to say that there is some truth in Dave and Hap's comments. Some quick math: average point total in the league thus far is 72.3. Canucks have 72, which by definition means that they are very much an average team. Also, they are indeed only a small losing streak away from missing the playoffs (if they let it slip or get injuries). Finally, really the main reason (and you have to admit it) that they made it anywhere last year was because of Luongo. They have no true offensive threat. Basically, they are trying desperately to develop young players while also trying to be successful in the present. What we can be proud of is how well they've done using this strategy; unlike the leafs the bottom has not fallen out of these team as a result of depending on expensive free-agents. The future is bright! Go 'nucks!

dan vanman from vancouver, Canada writes: The future IS bright Kevin. But the fact is they are both wrong, and that is what I rail against. There is this misconception back East that they can't score, but the Canucks are middle of the NHL in that category, not the bottom, as you would believe if you just listened to guys like Hap. Hap also called them soft, which is just wrong. They have stood toe to toe with supposedly bigger and "badder" teams all year. There are a few in their own division for crying out loud. The Wild, Calgary, and Edmonton are all supposed to be tougher, and the Canucks have shown they won't back down. They are a TEAM in all senses of the word, and that has to account for a lot come playoffs. As for a losing streak away from missing the playoffs, so is everyone in their division except the Oilers, who are all but mathmatically out. The Sharks, a preseason fave of ALL the prognosticators, are that same losing streak away. Such is parity in today's NHL. No offensive threat? What are the Sedins, chopped liver? Recently, the combo of Shannon and Raymond has shown that they have some guys that can score, given the chance. Kesler is going to be a 20 goal scorer ...or more. When Morrison is back, there is more offence there. That stat is misleading Kevin, you can make stats say anything if you try hard enough. Remember what I said about parity. Have a great day...Go Canucks!

dan vanman from vancouver, Canada writes: Green Mile...no argument here. I guess Cooke was a UFA next year, and they wanted something back...Pettinger is supposed to be better offensively, but he only has 2 goals so far this year!

Mrs. T from Chilliwack, Canada writes: The Canucks will go as far as the Ducks again this year, and the Ducks will win the cup again. If they would have got Jokinin or Sundin or Richards they wouldn't get past the Ducks anyway.

dan vanman from vancouver, Canada writes: Evelyn...dumb? Do you know about the salary cap? The new rules? Pettinger is signed for next year at 1.0 million. Cooke is a UFA at the end of this season, and makes 1.5 million. He was probably going to leave anyhow. I mean, its not the blockbuster everyone wanted...but dumb?

John Medrzycki from Vancouver, Canada writes: Rumour has it (and, of course, that & a $1.50 will buy you a cup of coffee) that Cooke was not popular in the Canucks dressing room - so, while I'm not jumpin' up & down about getting a 2-goal scorer (or whatever), this may be more about getting rid of something negative - rather than adding something positive.
