  1. David G from Toronto, Canada writes: For the record, Carlos Delfino is a restricted free agent (expiring contract) this summer, and Joey Graham will be a restricted free agent (expiring contract) next summer.
  2. Ryan Hickman from Canada writes: I am a huge Delfino fan. I'd love to see him stay in a Raptors jersey. Next year should be very interesting when it comes to opportunities to get a big impact player in here.
  3. M Spiker from Ottawa, Canada writes: Gee Grange you wouldn't want to mention that if BC hadn't signed/extended a bunch of big and very questionable contracts (RN, Joey, JK, KH, MB, and even TJ) and has to find a lot of money to re-sign JC using Bird Rights (rather than negotiating an extension that was more favourable to their cap situation) that he would have way more than $12M to sign a UFA this summer.

Never mind that he could have made a bigger move this year when they have a weak conference and top teams that could be beaten if they had an athletic inside player.

Having expiring contracts 1 year from now will be nice but you still need cap room to bring in a significant player (like LAL, PHX, and DAL did). They will be in a position to make the type of trade CLE and NOH did -- which may or may not help.
  4. Bing Xu from Halifax, Canada writes: Yeah, Spiker, I agree. Expiring contract only have value if the player are not needed. Otherwise you will still need cap room to re-sign them. Why you want to give up your own good players, like Parker to sign some other free agents?
  5. andy c from Canada writes: Spiker; rasho and his contract were aquired in a trade. yeah it stinks but would you rather have bonner at centre and that bundle of joy eric williams on the roster? hump's contract is small enough i'm not to worried about (he's being paid about what a guy who only sees the floor every three games should be paid). but joey, kopono and baston should never have happened. i'm just speculating but i think what BC was trying to do was to make a whole bunch of contracts come due at the same time instead of a similar amount split over two seasons.
  6. David G from Toronto, Canada writes: To M Spiker

Jose Calderon was not eligible for an extension last summer. Players whose first NBA contract is for three seasons or less become restricted free agents, and are not eligible for extensions. And even if the Raptors had not signed Kapono, extended Humphries, signed Baston or picked up Graham's fourth year option, once they sign Jose and use their first round draft choice, they likely would not have had any cap space, let alone enough to sign a major free agent.

Your argument is based on incorrect interpretations of the collective bargaining agreement.
  7. One For All All For One from Canada writes: Also to Spiker:

In addition to what David G said, Rasho's contract wasn't the doing of BC, but a left over from the huge deal to Bonner. Humprhies, Baston and Graham have perfectly reasonable contracts, and I guarentee you Jason Kapono has value. Reading your posts it seems like you think the raptors should only have 9 players.

I think we'll could get Defino for a reasonable amount. He is inconsistent, a bit of a ball hog, and likely wouldn't work nearly as well in another system.

What I would love to see is Kapono traded next season for an expiring contract. He is a 'plug and play' type player who could quickly adjust, and quality teams are always in need of a role player like that. Whats more he is someone else on the floor who can take the big shot, or at the very least someone you have to cover. After seeing what Korver did for the Jazz, I'd think some contenders would be interested in him. The best part about a trade like that would be we'd get the Mid level exception back.
  8. Bobby Del Rio from Toronto, Canada writes: I think the math is a little off?

To my recollection, Rasho makes about $8 million/year. Parker and Garbo are about $3/4 mill each. So that's at least 14/16 million in expiring contracts next year. Throw in the scrubs, and we've got the best part of $20 million in expiring contracts to play with around next year's trade deadline...

  9. Michael Grange from Toronto, Canada writes: Don't know what I was thinking. My math was way off...I think I stopped counting after Rasho and AP. The Raptors entering the last year of their contracts are: Rasho ($8.4m); AP (4.5); Garbo (4.25); Baston (1.976); Joey (2.449) and Moon ($711,000). The total is roughly $21.3m, not the $12m I stated in print. You can count on a pretty busy off-season and/or trade deadline a year from now.
