Hello RM, enjoyed some giggles last night. At the moment Tangs is with my Flames (I grew up in MTL a Habs fan) and Tangs is under-used and still a great player. If Gainey and Sutter can ink the deal we might see both teams in an all Canadian final! Wouldn't that just piss Bettman off - hopefully off his high pedistal...Ark- Posted 20/02/08 at 3:43 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Drew Diggs from Toronto, Canada writes: Rumour has is that the Flames are very interested in either Olli Jokinnen or Sundin. Habs would love Hossa or Havlat, personally I think Hossa would be a great fit on that Habs team, although im not sure that a team filled with Euros will have the best success in the playoffs.

P Scott from Canada writes: Drop Tanguay, he's overpaid ($5.5 mil/season). Ryder and a draft pick would be good, but Ryder won't be staying. Not tough enough for the West.

Craig W from Calgary, Canada writes: rumors the flames are after Jokinen are old news. this is what, the third year in a row we've heard those rumors? No kidding he'd be solid in a trade with Tanguay - same cap hit, but Oli is a far more valuable player.. Would need to give up more than just Tangs. Probably a prospect or draft pick, and since we just lost Mickey Renaud (RIP) draft picks are a little more important than they were last week...
I say toss Tanguay and Yelle, or Tanguay and Eriksson... Bring Oli to Calgary!- Posted 20/02/08 at 4:52 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Eric B from Ottawa, Canada writes: As a Montreal fan, I don't especially want neith Tanguay not Hossa. Tanguay is overpaid (over $5M) and in this age of salary cap management, that's not good, plus he's relatively small and above all he,s french-canadian, which means he'll have overwhelming pressure from the media & fans which will work against him. Hossa is strong and talented, but has never had any playoff success and isn't really the type of player that will give 110% effort consistantly, like the rest of the Habs are doing. (although, Kovalev is definitely not the type either and he's proving me wrong).
I would take Sundin or Jokinen anyday over those two above, however, that might be dreaming. Brad Richards-for-Huet minor considerations is a more likely scenario that would definitely make me a happy fan.- Posted 20/02/08 at 4:54 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

j wilson from vancouver, Canada writes: Look for Ottawa to shuffle hard, and I dont mean just Redden. It looks like they should be able to cling to fourth in the east by playoffs, but since the second month of the season theyre very middle of the pack in the weak East. That means they might actually be out of the playoffs without that great streak in October.
Ottawa is the team every other team wants to play in the first round. Basically, tie up Alfie and Heatley, and you'll win.
To Murray's credit, he seems well aware of this and is looking to trade.- Posted 20/02/08 at 5:10 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Great idea. However, that loudmouth should be banned from any and all TV networks as well. Maybe then I wouldn't have to adjust the volume on my TV to avoid having my ear drums shattered by this doofus' inane "analysis" which is usually delivered at a higher decibel level than a typical Metallica concert - although there's nothing wrong with Metallica!- Posted 20/02/08 at 5:33 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Good point. However, Ottawa hasn't been middle of the pack in the east since their 15-2 start. they've been in the bottom third (i.e. 11th place) of all the teams in the East since their 15-2 start as there are only 4 teams in the east with a worse point percentage than Ottawa since the 17 game mark: Tampa, Toronto, NYI and Carolina. Their record over the last 43 games would place them in 11th place in the east over that stretch,- Posted 20/02/08 at 5:41 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Eric B from Canada writes: to the guys discussing Ottawa's slowdown, could this perhaps be due to the new coach? obviously he had the player's full attention and respect to start the year, but since then the guys don't seem very motivated, there's no great system in place in Ottawa, not much change from the playing style...things you would expect when a team that talented struggles.
Of course, I can't say Paddock has really dealt with the goaltending situation very well either.
I think Murray should pull a New Jersey stunt and fire the coach with one month left in the season and take over behind the bench himself...the near-same group of players got to the finals with him last year. Just let the trade deadline go by and then you might see this sort of move -- just what the team needs. Then they can give a bit of competition to my Habs...- Posted 20/02/08 at 6:05 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Randy Lewis from Calgary, Canada writes: Three days of meetings (golf) and the only tangible thing that comes from them are that penalties in overtime are going to be a minute long in the AHL next year. My goodness...what a waste of time. I undertstand that the majority of talks around this date is going to be about trades but they could have addressed other concerns:
- the point structure for wins-losses-ot losses...something needs to be done because it seems as though every game this season is overtime or a shootout.
- the entire structure of overtime, instead of a shoot-out, continue eliminating a player per side ever five minutes until it is one on one with a goalie in each net. Talk about exciting!
- ways to increase scoring (it's almost back to pre-lockout numbers) - goaltender equipment, widening the rink, etc.
I think there could have been meaningful discussions on all the above and I think there will be eventually but to tell me that there's one minute penalties in overtime is all that was accomplished is not what I wanted to hear.- Posted 20/02/08 at 9:15 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Mariposa Belle from Leacockland, Canada writes: Randy Lewis - the points structure has to go European football. Make every game a 3 point game. Regulation and OT win - 3 points. Go to the SO - two points for the win, 1 for the loss. At this time of year, you would see a lot of teams on the cusp of the playoffs going for three rather than two or one.
As for the SO, players should just get one chance until the entire team is depleted. You just may see goalies shooting on each other. Not worth the price of the ticket but might cover the entertainment tax.- Posted 20/02/08 at 9:52 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

j wilson from vancouver, Canada writes: Eric B., dunno the answer to that one. I always thought Paddock was a good coach.
Murray has a history of building skilled teams that dont flourish in the playoffs. He should have been trading for balls this past summer after Anaheim spanked them. This might be the end of him if Ottawa is out in five or six.
Wow.
11th overall. Not strong.
Might be time to stop chewing the fat over Ottawa at all and focus on the Habs.

Daniel Liu from Toronto, Canada writes: If the Habs pull the trigger, Jokinen is the better fit because he is a center and his contract status (signed for another three years at a reasonable price).
I think one of the reasons why Fletcher is getting 'rowboat' offers for Sundin is the latter's musings over the last couple of years of calling it a career. I wouldn't give up the the expected players and draft picks for that.- Posted 20/02/08 at 10:39 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

steve allan from Canada writes: Just reading through some of the messages here and I can't believe that some of you so-called Habs' fans would rather have Jokinen over Tanguay?? You people are either nuts or you don't know squat about hockey.
Tanguay is muti-dimensional, he can play offence and as well as defence. He's a plus 13 and only has 12 of his 51 points on the PP, whereas the floater Jokinen has almost half his points on the PP and he has the worst =/- on the Panthers. The guy sucks.
You can't just look at points, you have to look at the complete package. Jokinen is one of the laziest players in the league. He'd never fit into Carbonneau's game plan.- Posted 21/02/08 at 12:49 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Also Tanguay is playing second line minutes in Calgary. What's he going to play in Montreal? Will he like that? How will he handle the media their as a French Canadian?
Personally... if I was a hab fan.. I would be looking at Tanguay straight up for Ryder... maybe toss in a third or fourth round pick.

Earl Anthony from Canada writes: Montreal's offense is fine. We do not need to add a scorer especially if Ryder is becoming hot.
It is defensively that the Habs need bolstering. What Montreal needs is a shutdown defensive player that can be utilized against the other team's best line. Jagr- 4 assists last game and the Alfredsson line had Montreal beat in the first 4 minutes.

Ryan M from Ottawa, Canada writes: Eric B - I agree, Murray should pull a Lou and take over the reigns of the team. Paddock has not only screwed around with the goaltending situation and caused a ton of controversy (especially for the Ottawa media, who muct be loving his perpetual indecision), he's not solidified any sensible lines. His defensive pairings are inconsistent, preventing them from developing any sort of chemistry. Fisher is on a line by himself, and his offensive potential is being untapped. Not to mention, the team just looks unmovitaved out there. But Eric - 'give some competition to my Habs'? What is the season series at? What was the result the last time they met up? ;) j wilson - can't agree with you about Murray. He largely put together the Ducks team that dismantled the Sens last year. The recent swap with Carolina saw him bring in a big, tough defender, and a smart, skilled forward, both with Cup rings, and both Canadian. I doubt his time here is coming to an end... I for one wouldn't mind seeing the Habs steal the spotlight. The Sens flew in under the radar last year, and look at what happened - the pressure was all on Buffalo. Granted the Sens aren't playing as well as they were in the second half of last season (yet), but still... Cheers

Tangs wouldn't play on the first line in Montreal either, but unlike Calgary, he would see spot duty on the number one line. He could also be used in the power play, something he rarely sees in Calgary. I don't want to see Jokinen in a Habs uniform. Why trade a one-way play like Ryder to obtain another one? It won't happen. Both Carbo and Gainey were defensive specialists and they surely know what we know about Jokinen!- Posted 21/02/08 at 1:44 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Tricky Woo from Montreal, Canada writes: Glad to see some common sense on Jokinen - it blows my mind that this guy, year after year, is supposedly one of the most coveted players at the deadline. He's been captain for how long of a team that is gonna finally make the playoffs 'this' year for how long? Where's the leadership - where does the buck stop? As for Habs, I also agree they don't need offense -they can score 4 or 5 (or 6, baby!) any given night. The chemistry's good, and Hossa or another Euro would just send Kovalev off to the Russian papers again complaining he doesn't get respect. Yes, the Habs could use D, but any trade is gonna cost not only Ryder but probably a young guy, and they all have so much amazing potential, I would hate to see anyone go. Price and Halak aren't ready yet, so keep Huet, even if they might lose him this summer. Habs are best in the East, great chemistry, upbeat dressing room, and just keep getting hotter - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
