NAPLES, Fla. — The first trade completed at the general managers' winter meetings was a minor one — defenceman Jaroslav Modry went from the Los Angeles Kings to the Philadelphia Flyers for a third-round choice in this year's entry draft.
What is of the most interest about this trade is that it probably signals the end of the attempts by Flyers GM Paul Holmgren to get Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Tomas Kaberle. Those talks were ended when Kaberle refused to waive the no-trade clause in his contract.
Cliff Fletcher, the Leafs' interim GM, said Tuesday that he will not be making any trades at the winter meetings. He is trying to find a way to move Leafs captain Mats Sundin, who also has a no-trade clause, but said the offers were not good enough. However, he hinted there was enough going on with his fellow GMs that he will return to Toronto and confer with his staff to plan their next move.
Modry, 37, has six points in 61 games with the Kings this season and is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. But the Flyers have a lot of injuries on defence and have lost seven consecutive games.
