Former Manchester City midfielder Kiki Musampa who just joined Toronto FC on trial saw some action late in Saturday's 2-0 victory over the Kansas City Wizards at IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla.
Another midfielder, Colombian Johnnier Montano, is supposed to come in for a trial next week.
But TFC's first preseason victory belonged to a midfielder who was Major League Soccer's 2007 rookie of the year and that was Maurice Edu who scored a goal in each half.
TFC had two draws and a loss in its first three preseason matches and will play the U.S. under-17 team Sunday morning before taking Monday off.
Greg Sutton played the whole game in goal for TFC.
Jim Brennan, who was the TFC captain for the match, sent a cross from the left side into the area to set up Edu's first goal.
Edu and goalkeeper Kevin Hartman were in a tangle after the initial shot but Edu got to his feet to score.
Todd Dunivant started TFC's second-half goal, looping a pass to Ronnie O'Brien who passed to Edu who was unmarked in the middle. Edu's volley hit the top right corner.
Edu had a busy MLS off-season playing for both the U.S. senior team and the under-23 team that is trying for an Olympic spot.
"I think I'm feeling pretty comfortable with the guys in there and our team gelled well today, " he said. "I think we had the better of the play for the most part, we created a lot of good chances and luckily I got on the end of a couple of them."
The Wizards did not have a shot on goal in the second half.
"I felt today we were sharper," manager Mo Johnston said. "We knocked the ball about, we got behind them, we scored two very, very good goals from Maurice Edu and I felt everyone worked hard for each other in terms of the whole group, which was very, very pleasing.
"Greg (Sutton) had a couple of things to deal with in the first half, and after that it was all us. We opened them up and we had three, four real clear chances in the second half. But, K.C. are a very good team and this is only preseason, it's all about fitness it's not about winning games, we're here to get sharper, stronger as a unit and you can see the signs we're ahead of where we were last year."
Midfielder Carl Robinson will be leaving TFC Sunday as he returns toWales to be with his wife who will give birth next week.
