EDMONTON The new owner of the Edmonton Oilers says he will work to help build a new arena for the NHL team and will craft a written commitment to keep the franchise in the Alberta capital.
Daryl Katz declined to assess the current state of the team or speculate on changes he would make, saying that would be premature given his offer still needs to be approved the by league.
Katz spoke to the media in a conference call today, a day after the team's owners agreed to sell him all 7,492 shares in the franchise.
The Edmonton pharmacy billionaire is paying $22,000 a share in the $200-million (Cdn.) deal.
The 46-year-old had been trying for close to a year to buy the team in a series of escalating offers that began at C$145 million.
He has promised to put up $100 million for a new rink, build the team a practice facility and spend to the $50-million player salary cap
