D W from Switzerland writes: very good summary; one comment, I would shorten the Expansion Era to the early 1980s, rather than 1986, because in fact after the WHA teams joined, that era ended fairly quickly and by 1983-1984 when the Islanders and Oilers would face off regularly in the Stanley Cup finals, the old expansion/WHA lines had blurred a lot
  2. D W from Switzerland writes: ... and following the above: how can the Goaltender Era (= low scoring?) cover the 1980s, when guys like Gretzky and Mario came on board to score 200 points a season????
  3. Alan Ryder from Canada writes: The definitions of eras is highly subjective. I have split the expansion and goaltending eras based on the reversal of a trendline (scoring inflation). It is true that the beginning of my goaltending era was very tough on goaltenders.
