Brett Vancise from Regina, writes: Good deal for both sides. The Jays are better defensivly and rid a hobbling Glaus. Good for The Cardinals because Rick Ankiel has a buddy to juice up with. It's difficult for Rolen to get along with LaRussa when he can't even stay awake at a red light.

BB Freak from Canada writes: This a good analysis...some pretty big if's as far as his health goes... a healthy Rolen is a terrific ballplayer, but it's been a while since that was the case...the other point is that the acquisition of Eckstein necessitates the need for a better fielding 3b, as Eck doesn't have the defensive acumen he once had, and I suspect moving Glaus was not an easy proposition considering his recent health and contract..

Roger Davis from Nanaimo, BC, Canada writes: Jeff. This all comes down to health. Rolen has had two shoulder surgeries one of which was this latest "clean up of scar tissue" or two shoulder surgeries this lastest clean up? Also, have you any sources on how his surgery went and his prognosis?

TIM AMEY from Saskatoon, Canada writes: So Rolen for Glaus, eh? That's interesting because I could have sworn the Jays needed pitching.

Oh Canada from Canada writes: So we gave up someone like Shea for Troy, then get someone similar (average/gap2gap) in Scott.
And the Blue Jays turn in circles.

Andrew Stoeten from Toronto, Canada writes: Oh Canada... we get it You're frustrated. I understand the frustration, but I think you could see what JP is trying to do here if you actually looked at the deal instead of going straight to the knee-jerk whining. Boo hoo.
And Shea Hillenbrand is not remotely close to being one of the best defensive third basemen ever. There's a massive difference.- Posted 14/01/08 at 3:43 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Andrew Berthoff from Toronto, Canada writes: I like this deal, and the Jays get the better of it provided both players stay major-injury-free. But one big dive to his left and Rolen will hit the concrete floor, so I wonder if his range will be affected by playing at the RC.
But, really, Blair, it's not even February and you're already running down La Russa, the Cardinals and the people of St. Louis. All of them must have sniffed out a hockey writer masquerading as a baseball reporter and snubbed you big-time around 2002.
Please, give the all-things-St. Louis-bashing a rest!- Posted 14/01/08 at 9:19 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Patrick Taylor from St. Louis, United States writes: In addition, the third baseman Mike Schmidt was referring to is not the third baseman of today. His shoulder has never completely healed and he does not have the arm he once did. Having said that, Rolen is still one of the best third basemen in the league, but I don't see how much predictive power a twelve year old comment from Mike Schmidt will be in forecasting Rolen's career with the Jays.
With Eckstein, you have two of the weakest arms injury plagued players in the league on the left hand side of infield. If you want Adam Kennedy, we'll throw him into the deal.- Posted 14/01/08 at 12:54 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Drew Diggs from Toronto, Canada writes: Don't worry about Eckstein getting injured. If he goes down, in comes Johnny Mac. Also, im wondering if the Jays would consider playing Johnny Mac at third base if Rolan went down for a period of time.

Bobby S from Toronto, Canada writes: I actually like this trade for the Jays. I think they got as much out of Glaus as humanly possible. There is a lot of uncertainty with Glaus and the whole steriod debate, that I think it's best for him to go to another orgainzation. I'm sure Cardinal fans are probably thinking the same thing for Rolen. This may be a situation where both teams will incur the same outcome, either a win-win or a lose-lose. Either way, I'm glad Riccardi has done something, unlike a certain other GM in Toronto

Ryan Deyell from Listowel, Canada writes: Eckstein/Rolen seem like an improvement over McDonald/Glaus. Not enough to overtake Boston or New York, though (or even wildcard favourites, Detroit or Cleveland).
Jays need to improve their pitching to make any strides this year.
I liked how McGowan & Marcum finished the season last year. With Ace Doc & Burnett..... have the makings of a pretty good starting staff, but need a solid #2 that can get 15 wins... anything out there????- Posted 14/01/08 at 8:09 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

dan vanman from vancouver, Canada writes: Ryan...if he comes back healthy, how about Gustavo Chacin? Surely he is not written off already?
Rolen for Glaus is a great move, as long as Rolen stays fit. Check back after the first couple months...- Posted 14/01/08 at 9:50 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Ryan Deyell from Listowel, Canada writes: Dan... I had some hope for Chacin after 2005, but 2 bad seasons with over 5.00 ERA & injury problems makes me a little scared...
If the Jays could acquire a true #2 or #1A starter, their starting rotation could be dangerous.
it would be nice to have the ability to send any of 5 starters out there - giving them at least the chance to win.- Posted 14/01/08 at 10:30 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment
