Russia wins bronze

Canadian Press

PARDUBICE, Czech Republic — Nikita Filatov scored twice Saturday to help Russia beat the United States 4-2 and take the bronze medal at the under-20 World Ice Hockey Championship.

Russia — the finalist for the last three years — and the United States — the 2004 champion — had to settle for the third and fourth places after losing Friday's semifinal matches.

Russia jumped to a commanding 4-0 lead behind first-period goals by Alexei Cherepanov, Evgeni Kurbatov and Filatov and another one by Filatov 1:30 into the second period, his fourth at the tournament.

Rhett Rakhshani replied with the first goal for the Unites States midway through the second half and Jordan Schroeder added a power-play goal with 6:21 remaining.

The United States beat Russia 3-2 in the preliminary group stage a week ago.
