Wharnsby: A record-setting start for Bernier

Globe and Mail Blog Post

When Jonathan Bernier, who began the season with the Los Angeles Kings, blanked the Czech Republic on Wednesday, the native of Laval, Que. became the 11th Canadian junior goalie to record a shutout in his first game at the world under-20 championship. But his 44 saves set a Canadian record for most saves in a shutout, beating the 36-save effort of Roberto Luongo back in Dec. 26, 1998 in a 0-0 draw against Slovakia.

The other Canadian goalies to record shutouts are as follows:
Carey Price -- Dec. 12, 2006 vs. Sweden 2-0 (31 saves)
Réjean Beauchemin -- Dec. 28, 2004 vs. Germany 9-0 (17 saves)
Josh Harding -- Dec. 29, 2003 vs. Ukraine 10-0 (11 saves)
Pascal Leclaire -- Dec. 25, 2001 vs. France 15-0 (10 saves)
Manny Legacé -- Dec. 26, 1992 vs. United States 3-0 (31 saves)
Trevor Kidd -- Dec. 26, 1990 vs. Switzerland 6-0 (20 saves)
Allen Bester -- Dec. 28, 1983 vs. Switzerland 12-0 (12 saves)
Mike Sands -- Dec. 26, 1982 vs. Germany 4-0 (stats unavailable)
Tim Bernardt -- Dec. 23, 1977 vs. Germany 8-0 (25 saves)
Al Jensen -- Dec. 23, 1976 vs. Poland 14-0 (26 saves)
