TSN does a crackerjack job on the TV broadcast of the world junior hockey championship, but Canadian hockey fans could do a lot worse than catch the games on radio.
In Toronto, that means listening to The Fan 590, where play-by-play announcer Dan Dunleavy and colour commentator Jack Miller are broadcasting all of Canada's games from the Czech Republic. These guys are terrific. Dunleavy, who is a workhorse around the Fan, nicely compliments the stylish Miller, whose other jobs include being the voice of the Belleville Bulls for CJBQ radio, and being a Belleville city councillor.
Miller's got that plummy AM-radio voice that would serve him well broadcasting any event. (Why he's not on TV regularly is a mystery). And he knows his junior hockey.
So next time Canada's playing, try listening to the radio. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Mike Anderson from Canada writes: Although I find Dan Dunleavy a little cocky for his own good, I do commend The FAN 590 for the efforts in recent years to put forth a professional broadcast team for this event. Jack Miller is the OHL's best caller. Period. And Dunleavy, beyond his annoying habit of trying to force the listener into believing he's the best friend of every player on the ice or floor (be it hockey or lacrosse), does enough junior hockey to at least have a very good understanding of what it is. And both men are trained professional broadcasters, unlike the two who used to represent The FAN at this event. Remember Mel Raskin and Rick Cornacchia? In all honesty, there are guys calling Junior C games in Canada who were more competent.
