Ticats pounce on O'Billovich

Globe and Mail Update

VANCOUVER — The Hamilton Tiger-Cats search for a general manager has landed on Bob O'Billovich, who will be formally announced as the CFL club's new football chief at a press conference Wednesday.

O'Billovich, 67, currently serves as the B.C. Lions director of player personnel, where he has built on his reputation as a top-flight talent evaluator and recruiter. A CFL lifer who played defensive back and later became an assistant coach with the Ottawa Rough Riders in the 1960s and 70s, O'Billovich has been the head coach of the Lions and Toronto Argonauts. He also served as the Lions general manager.

O'Billovich, who resides in Oakville, Ont., is expected to retain Tiger-Cats head coach Charlie Taaffe, whom team president Scott Mitchell would like to keep. Mitchell pledged to hire a candidate with previous experience as a general manager, and said the successful person would have the ultimate say on Taaffe's future with the team.
