TORONTO Joe Torre knew there would be days like yesterday dealing with subjects such as the reputed infidelity of the team's star player when he first accepted the job to be the manager of the New York Yankees in 1996.
But it doesn't mean he has to like it.
Torre said he felt the New York Post definitely overstepped its bounds when it published a tawdry little story yesterday, complete with pictures, about star third baseman Alex Rodriguez's big night on the town in Toronto last Sunday in the company of an attractive blonde who is definitely not his wife.
The Yankees' manager said the personal affairs of the players have no business being detailed on the pages of newspapers.
"People seem to think that should be interesting to people," Torre said before last night's third game of the series against the host Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre.
"I think when you get into that area, yeah, I think it's over the line.
The Yankees arrived in Toronto on Sunday, a day in advance of the first game of the three-game set against the Jays, who won the opener 7-2.
The Post story, in great detail, outlined how the "cozy duo" enjoyed an expensive dinner with two others at a downtown Toronto steakhouse.
Afterward, according to the story, the party headed to a "glitzy" strip club before A-Rod and his female friend made their way back to his hotel, "where the pair ducked into an elevator and headed upstairs just after midnight."
