Well, what do you know? For once the Jays supported a good pitching performance with a little bit of offence to kick off the start of an 11-day, 10-game home-stand in style with a win against the hated Yankees.
IMPRESSED: Toronto pitcher Dustin McGowan fought off the impulse to fall on his own sword for once to gain his first victory as a Toronto starter in almost two years.
UNIMPRESSED: Toronto’s Frank Thomas had a chance to break open the game in the fifth inning, coming to the plate with the bases loaded and the Jays leading 3-0. Instead Thomas was left looking at a called third strike.
WHAT THE MANAGER SAID: “He’s got overpowering stuff,” said Toronto’s John Gibbons about McGowan. “It’s just a matter of it all coming together and him believing in himself. The sky’s the limit.”
ON THE MOVE: Shortly after the victory the Jays announced they were optioning utility infielder Ryan Roberts back to Triple-A Syracuse and bringing up right-handed reliever Brian Wolfe. Wolfe has been deadly in Syracuse so far this season, posting a 2-0 record with a 0.84 earned run average, with 20 strikeouts in 21.1-innings of work.
