Athletes staying in the Beijing Olympic village in 2008 can stretch out in beds 10 centimetres wider than those that were provided in Athens for the Summer Games, according to the Beijing News. But there won't be a lot to do in the room besides sleep. Televisions will have to be orders and paid for separately.
According to International Olympic Committee, organizers are required to provide rooms that are the standard as a three-star hotel. The athlete apartments are scheduled to be finished by year end.
Besides the wider bed, each room will have a table, a closet and decorative pictures on the wall, but no TV.
The Beijing Organizing Committee, known by the acronym BOCOG, also reports that 1.5 million beds will be needed to accommodate foreign and Chinese tourists around the time of the Games.
Beijing currently has only 109,000 rooms in 658 star-rated hotels. The travel company Agoda, an online independent travel company specializing in Asia, says it has been aggressively improving inventory relationships in China. That company offers 2,144 hotels in China, in 70 provinces, allowing Olympic visitors for wider travel, but only 248 of those hotels are located in Beijing itself.
