Avalanche have question marks in goal

DENVER — Just two weeks ago, Jose Theodore sheepishly was fending off comparisons to Hall of Famer Patrick Roy that were coming at him fast and furious like so many shots from the Minnesota Wild. Now, he's sick and the Colorado Avalanche are ailing. Theodore has been pulled in each of the Avs' two losses in the Western Conference semi-final series at Detroit, where he surrendered eight goals in less than four periods.

Wild have big decisions ahead in off-season

ST. PAUL — Jacques Lemaire says this off-season is like any other. He says he will go home to Florida, speak with his wife Mychelle, meet with Minnesota Wild management, and decide whether he wants to return for another year behind the bench.

Theodore comes up big as Avs clinch series

DENVER — Jose Theodore and the Colorado Avalanche withstood another onslaught from the relentless Minnesota Wild for a series-clinching 2-1 win Saturday night. Theodore stopped 34 shots, including a glove save off Kim Johnsson's shot with 21 seconds left and the Avs took the series in six games.

Governors approve sale of Wild

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Craig Leipold officially took over as owner of the Minnesota Wild on Thursday, completing the purchase of the team from Bob Naegele in the middle of the first-round playoff series against Colorado. "It's been a long process," Leipold said at a press conference. "Lots of signatures the last couple days. We were hoping to get it done last week and didn't get done. It just kept dragging out and dragging out.

Wild catch their breath against Avs

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Keeping tabs on Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Paul Stastny and Milan Hejduk is tough enough with a full stable of defensemen. With Nick Schultz on the shelf after a surprise appendectomy, and Kurtis Foster lost to a broken leg near the end of the regular season, the Minnesota Wild are short-handed on the blue line, and it cost them in Game 1 of the playoffs against Colorado.

Captain Clutch comes through for Avs

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Joe Sakic added another line to his amazing playoff resume. Sakic tipped in a shot by Ruslan Salei from the point midway through the first overtime period, his eighth career playoff goal in extra time, to send the Colorado Avalanche past the Minnesota Wild 3-2 on Wednesday night. The goal came at 11:11 of OT and gave Colorado a 1-0 lead in this first-round series. Game 2 is at Minnesota on Friday.

Wild must counter Avalanche experience

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Beaten up last April by the eventual NHL champions, the Minnesota Wild have some playoff experience to build on a year later. A couple of their top offensive players, Marian Gaborik and Pierre-Marc Bouchard, were even around when they made that improbable run to the Western Conference finals in 2003.

Canucks face uphill challenge

VANCOUVER — When Vancouver Canucks general manager Dave Nonis says missing the NHL playoffs is never an acceptable result in this marketplace, he is in lockstep with the fan base and ensures the lofty expectations that greeted the 2007-08 season will survive into next fall.

Lacroix inducted into Colorado Sports Hall of Fame

DENVER — To Pierre Lacroix, his induction into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame is an honour more for the organization he led to two Stanley Cup titles in his decade as general manager of the Colorado Avalanche. "What it does represent to me, this very special honour, is that what we've created together, it's a lot of people that got involved and I got a lot of support," Lacroix said Monday on the eve of his induction.

Wild clinch division title

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Marian Gaborik added to his career-high goals total, now 42, on a defining night for a career that began 7 1/2 years ago — the first time the Minnesota Wild took the ice. Gaborik scored twice in the third period to help the Wild beat the Calgary Flames 3-1 on Thursday night for their first Northwest Division title.

Canucks slip to ninth

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Wild hope they've toughened up enough for the playoffs. The other parts of their game are working well, too. Cocking their fists and firing away on the power play, the Wild surged past the slumping Vancouver Canucks with a 4-0 victory on Friday night. The Wild can clinch a spot in the postseason with one more win, but they're chasing more than that.

Oilers suffer at hands of the Wild

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Two nights after one of their worst first periods of the season, the Minnesota Wild responded with one of their best. The way the Wild's season has gone, that makes perfect sense. Minnesota scored two goals in the first seven minutes and Niklas Backstrom made 32 saves in a 3-1 victory over the Oilers on Wednesday night, bouncing back from a horrendous showing in Edmonton.

Oilers continue red-hot play

EDMONTON — The Edmonton Oilers may not have made any ground in their quest for the last playoff spot in the Western Conference, but head coach Craig MacTavish isn't worried that time is running out on his team. Andrew Cogliano scored a pair of goals as the Oilers continued their unlikely playoff push, defeating the Minnesota Wild 5-3 on Monday night.

Playoff-style games the rest of the way

VANCOUVER — Barring an uninterrupted winning streak to finish off their schedule, the Vancouver Canucks will not enter the NHL postseason as one of the favourites to win the Stanley Cup.

Canucks still eyeing top spot

VANCOUVER — Clinching a spot in the playoffs remains the prime objective, but as the Vancouver Canucks head out on an important three-game road trip the team hasn't given up on the thought of finishing first in the Northwest Division. Vancouver plays the Calgary Flames Tuesday, the Colorado Avalanche Wednesday and then the division-leading Minnesota Wild Friday.
