Sabres sign journeyman Darche

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Journeyman minor league left wing Mathieu Darche signed a one-year, US$575,000 contract with the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday. Darche, 31, was an unrestricted free agent, who had a career-high 22 points (seven goals, 15 assists) in 73 games with Tampa Bay last season. He has spent most of his career in the American Hockey League since breaking into the NHL as an undrafted free agent with Columbus in 2000.

NHL hopes Wrigley game will raise profile

CHICAGO — The National Hockey League is hoping its second Winter Classic outdoor game, scheduled to be played at revered baseball park Wrigley Field on Jan. 1 next year, will help raise the sport's profile. "We certainly expect that the NHL Winter Classic will be a home run for hockey in this ballpark," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said on Tuesday of the game between the Chicago Blackhawks and the rival Detroit Red Wings.

Boots puts Bettman in awkward position

So what's the difference between Jim Balsillie and William (Boots) Del Biaggio? Well, Balsillie seems to actually have the money that everyone assumes he does, thanks to the success of those addictive BlackBerrys. Unlike Boots, he isn't under bankruptcy protection, he isn't facing a wave of lawsuits from angry lenders who believe they were defrauded, his wife hasn't split, he isn't under investigation by the FBI.

Crazy money

It's tempting to call the $57.12-million (all currency U.S.) for defenceman Brian Campbell or the $23-million for goaltender Cristobal Huet crazy money, but really, what constitutes crazy money any more in today's NHL? In a year in which the salary cap went up to a record $56.7-million – setting off another enormous spending spree on the opening day of the 2008 free-agent season – was the combined $79.

Sabres re-sign Gaustad

LEWISTON, N.Y — The Buffalo Sabres rewarded Paul Gaustad for his hard-hitting style, re-signing the blue-collar centre to a four-year, $9.2-million (U.S.) contract on Monday. Gaustad, a restricted free agent, had his rights retained by the Sabres last week when they made him a minimum-salary qualifying offer.

Clowe comes back with a bang

SAN JOSE — That Ryan Clowe would steal the show for the San Jose Sharks on the opening night of the playoffs may have been a surprise on one level only. After missing all but 15 games of the regular season following major reconstructive knee surgery, Clowe appeared in only four games for the Sharks prior to the start of the playoffs.

Sabres eliminated by Montreal

MONTREAL — Montreal's veteran checking line sent a message: The Canadiens are serious about finishing first in the NHL Eastern Conference. Bryan Smolinski got two goals while linemates Steve Begin and Tom Kostopoulos checked and crashed the desperate Buffalo Sabres from their first shift to their last en route to a 3-1 Montreal victory on Monday night.

Canadiens eye first in the East

MONTREAL — There are two games left in the NHL regular season and first place is within reach, so Montreal Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau asks: Why not go for it? That's why Carbonneau has no intention of resting banged-up veterans like Roman Hamrlik or Michael Ryder or starting anyone other than No. 1 goalie Carey Price when the Canadiens play host to the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night.

Sabres still in the hunt

TORONTO — The Buffalo Sabres could be eliminated from playoff contention by the time they line up for their game against the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre tomorrow. But the Sabres' 4-3 shootout victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Centre last night kept their slim playoff hopes alive for another 24 hours.

Something's amiss in Ottawa

OTTAWA — Insanity has returned to Ottawa — and it has nothing to do with Parliament coming back after the Easter break. Nor is this an April Fool's joke. At least not yet.

Young bucks show their stuff

The Toronto Maple Leafs' current roster doesn't have a bright future, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment president Richard Peddie said in an interview with Hockey Night in Canada before the Leafs' game with the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday. "Actually, I look at this team and I can't see we're making any progress towards winning a Stanley Cup," Peddie told Elliotte Friedman.

Bad luck arrives all at once

The Montreal Canadiens are about to discover whether there really is any magic in their season. So far, the Canadiens have lived charmed lives in their climb to the upper reaches of the NHL's Eastern Conference. This is not to say their lofty perch is undeserving.

Higgins powers Habs back to top

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Montreal Canadiens showed their flair for the dramatic in scoring a come-from-behind victory and reclaiming the top spot in the NHL's Eastern Conference standings last night. The Canadiens scored twice in the final 2 minutes 31 seconds of regulation time before Chris Higgins, who was stopped on a breakaway in the third period, redeemed himself with the overtime-winner in a 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

Roy downs Sens in shootout

OTTAWA — Derek Roy scored the shootout-winner to go along with two assists in regulation as the Buffalo Sabres kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators Thursday. Sabres captain Jason Pominville also beat goalie Martin Gerber in shootout, while Maxim Afinogenov, Jochen Hecht and Paul Gaustad scored in regulation.

Canadian clubs on the edge

OTTAWA — These days, you can't relax for a minute. Or in the case of the Ottawa Senators, 55 seconds.
